In the Dvorsky thread, poster mentioned only 2 playoff teams have cap space.
Yet, as per www.spotrac.com/nhl/cap/ seven playoff teams have cap space:
Detroit 13.5
Carolina 8.1
Pittsburgh 4.7
Buffalo 1.7
Seattle 5.4
Utah 7.3
Anaheim 9.7
puckpedia.com/teams says something different.
Help!

its because people dont understand the convoluted way the nhl does ltir and the websites dont explain how it works.blues2112 wrote: ↑13 Feb 2026 08:47 am In the Dvorsky thread, poster mentioned only 2 playoff teams have cap space.

most people assume that when a player is put on ltir that it removes that players cap hit. but in actualiy, for some reason, the nhl has a much more convulted way of doing salary relief for ltir and doesnt actually remove the cap hit, but allow you to get a bonus pool of money added to cap ceiling based on how close to the cap ceiling that team was.
The bonus cao relief is not simply the player on ltir full salary. It is the player's cap hit minus the team's available cap space at the time the player is placed on LTIR. so you are better off being close to the cap before you place a player on ltir because it thus allows you to go over the cap even mire.
the websites are simply listing the teams full salaries and the nhl usual cap ceiling, while not showing the bonus cap relief some teams have from players on ltir- thus why it looks like those teams dont have cap space. because the cap hits arent simpky removed like people assume they are but the formula is more complex

Re: please help me understand "cap space"
I believe you are referencing my post. I was just posting what I thought I heard JR say, but I might have mixed up the number of teams. But he did say there was a limited number of the current playoff teams. But the Cap isn't available cap space, it's cap limit skaters during the playoffs. You can have cap space now due to injury that you can ice players that are traded for. But come playoff time, the skaters you are playing have to be under the "playoff cap". So there's no world where you can skate over the cap like people had been doing in seasons past.blues2112 wrote: ↑13 Feb 2026 08:47 am In the Dvorsky thread, poster mentioned only 2 playoff teams have cap space.

Anyways, the real premise of what I posted was that the guys that the Blues are looking to trade whether it be Binner/Schenn/Faulk/Thomas/Parayko/Kyrou etc etc.. The ones that would bring you back something, they are all 6.5m or more. So it becomes a tricky situation when making those trades and fielding a cap compliant team.
