On February 3, 1989, former Cardinals first baseman Bill White was named National League president. Though headlines noted that he was the first black man to serve as league president, White preferred to focus on being the first former player to hold the post in over 70 years.

George “Specs” Toporcer was an elite pinch hitter who happened to back up two Hall of Fame second basemen in Rogers Hornsby and Frankie Frisch. He was also the first major league infielder to wear glasses in a game:

Wow, that Ozzie story wrt the Padres is outrageous. I've never heard that for. That they put a job seeking ad for Ozzie in the San Diego newspaper is amazing.remembirds wrote: ↑11 Feb 2026 09:56 am On this date in 1982, months after the teams agreed to terms, the Ozzie Smith-Garry Templeton trade was completed. The part of the story I find fascinating is when the Padres ask Ozzie to propose a long-term contract that would keep him a Padre for the rest of his career, and he suggests a 25-year, $25 million contract that would run through his AGE-51 SEASON!BrummerStealsHome wrote: ↑11 Feb 2026 10:20 amWow, that Ozzie story wrt the Padres is outrageous. Between that and the owner's wife offering him a job as a gardener, Ozzie's early career with the Padres was nuts.
