The Spring Training Roster Competition

Post by Talkin' Baseball »

This roster is mostly set, but there are a few spots being contended for. Things can change quickly, but here's how I see it going in to spring training:

1) C/DH Herrera
2) C Pages
3)
4) 1B/OF Burleson
5) 2B Wetherholt
6) SS Winn
7) 3B Gorman
8) IF Saggese
9)
10) LF Nootbaar
11) CF Scott
12) RF Walker
13) OF Church

Two spots being contended for on the position players side. #3 Will either be Crooks as a third catcher, or a utility man. #9 will be a utility man. The people in the running for the spots besides Crooks are Fermin, Torres, Ramos, and Velazquez.

Pitchers
1) May
2) Liberatore
3) McGreevy
4) Dobbins
5)

The last spot is a competition between Pallante, Fitts, Leahy, and Mathews

6) Svanson R
7) O'Brien R
8) Stanek R
9) Romero L
10) Graceffo R
11) Leahy R
12) Pallante
13)

The last bullpen spot is a competition between Soriano R, Naughton L , Z Thompson L, and Gastelum R with preference given to a left-hander. If Fitts doesn't make the rotation, he goes to Memphis.

My guesses:

I will go Crooks at 3. Fermin at 9. Fitts at 5. Our old friend Zack T. at lucky 13, if he is healthy enough.

I think Saggese could go to AAA to play everyday at least while Gorman gets his 4th tryout.
I think Fermin should be on the roster as the IF (in place of Saggese).

I think Crooks goes to AAA to play everyday and wait for an injury.
Pozo could be backup catcher again; he has some power which could be useful off the bench.

I think Pozo, Torres, Ramos, and Velazquez battle it out for the last 2 roster spots. Ramos has no options which could be an advantage for him and bad news for Torres who I would like to see get a chance at beloved utility bench guy who does not have to play a lot to be happy.

I don't think Pallante is going to be out of the rotation. I think Dobbins, Fitts, Leahy, Mathews battle for the #5 slot... assuming everyone is healthy,

I still think Romero should be gone by OD. We shall see... This could create a spot for Bruihl, Thompson, Raquet, Naughton.
Stanek, Leahy, Svanson, O'Brien, Soriano are the bullpen. Romero if he's still here makes six. I'm assuming Leahy does not make the rotation.

Pushard, Fernandez, Graceffo, Roycroft and the lefties listed above battle for the final 2 or 3 spots. Pushard is most likely one. Starters who dont make the rotation are also in this mix and could take up 1 of these slots. So Pushard and a starter (Fitts) plus a lefty if Romero is traded.

Gastellum has a chance but I doubt they rush him.
