Saggesse or Wetherholt should be able to play 3B and probably not a hole in the lineup like Gorman.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑09 Feb 2026 12:35 pmIf Gorman is a block at third, we ain’t got no third baseman in the system.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑09 Feb 2026 12:29 pmGorman has been around long enough and putting up the same - or worse - stats. If Saggesse is blocked at third by Gorman then put in in the outfield.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑09 Feb 2026 11:59 amAn idea. The team believes two of Walker, Scott and Gorman will emerge. I think that thought is somewhere embedded in this new model.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑09 Feb 2026 11:55 am If it was me I'd be reluctant to move Herrera to catcher because his offense could suffer. I'd give him some spring training reps at 1B to see whether he is better defensively than Burleson. If he can't play 1B then DH. We need his bat.
I'd have Saggesse and Wetherholt at 2B/3B depending on who has the best defense at 2B. OF is a mess. We need a couple guys to step up.

I imagine they'll try to put Herrera at catcher but he has a lot of problem with passed balls. I don't look for him to last at catcher but maybe I'm wrong. So here we go. As of now, all positions are penciled in except left field. So that’s one.
Catcher. My view. Once Herrera does not catch, where does he go. Left? DH? His bat must play. How do we figure this out when only at ST.
Third. All indications are Gorman. Once that changes, where does he go? DH? With Herrera?
Let’s just assume neither Herrera or Gorman stick- what next.
Enjoy.
To be honest, I’d trade Burleson and put Gorman, a third baseman, at first. The other corner that needs power. If he hits at third, he’d hit at first. Then JJ to third. Second from anyone of the other three.![]()
This kinda illustrates the elephant in the room, certain players getting multiple opportunities with one potential tool vrs others that haven't been giving one opportunity in the show and or have demonstrated MLB level skills...

Norman is going to be the OD 3rd baseman and he should be given the alternative is J.A.G. (Saggese).
Oli can always double switch him out late in games when they're ahead but as long as he hits (BIG ????), then he's the 3rd baseman.![]()
Herrera will be good behind the plate and will be an All-Star at C. Saggese will earn time either at 3B or Utility IFer and will be getting regular, everyday ABs midway through the season, while producing a la Donovan.
We will go into next year with a group of:
JJW, Winn, Herrera, Scott II up the middle.
We will also have Saggese and Burleson who will nice pieces to have. Church will surprise to and be a quality 4th OFer to have.
This will set us up to go out and get 2 boppers to play either 3B, LF/RF, or DH for next year.
As always, respect your opinion though!!
You have seen me say a dozen times C4L:
2026 Team > 2025 Team
I'm optimistic this could be THE surprise team of MLB, not a playoff juggernaut but an above .500 team.
(But c'mon man, Hererra an all-star catcher.........Saggese may indeed get time at 3rd since Norman could easily reek but you know to me he's J.A.G..................Church is a "meh").
But again, 2026 Team > 2025 Team IMO

Best case scenario with Herrera is he mashes and leads this team as a very good catcher. At minimum though, we need him to mash. Play him at DH or 1B then. (Burleson the other spot.)
Saggese is the one I am going to rub in hard when he plays like the new Donnie!! Just wait!!
Church hasn't has a shot. Dude can play. Fans will like him too.
Can't wait till we get to find out for ourselves!! How many days now?!?! Love this time of year!!!

I suppose Bloom could make some sort of deal for a AAA OFer who is ready for the jump. The other deals have been about stocking the minor league system with guys who are a couple of years out at best.... It does seem pretty scary to bank on Walker and Noot...
please, Baez, don't let your 2025 be a fluke.

Yes that's what everybody is hoping. Even so he has to spend a few months in AAA and do reasonably well before you would expect to see him with the big Club. Or he may need to spend the entire season in AAA. It's very unlikely he breaks spring training and comes North with the big Club.82birds wrote: ↑09 Feb 2026 15:47 pmagree.bccardsfan wrote: ↑09 Feb 2026 09:50 am I think if they pick an OFer it will be a one year prove it sort of deal. I agree I. Hererra will mash but the bulk of it will likely come from the DH spot.Cardinals4Life wrote: ↑09 Feb 2026 14:45 pmBest case scenario with Herrera is he mashes and leads this team as a very good catcher. Don't see it C4L, Donovan was a way superior player than Saggese.
Church looks like a "meh" to me.
But as always, I hope you're right since it would make the Cards a better team!
Re: Three of Eight positions need filled.
gorman was moved from 3b cuz of arenado. he wont be a plus defender but his defense wont be a problem. it will be his bat that determines if he can stick at all. if his bat doesnt improve then theres no position for him.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑09 Feb 2026 09:30 am Good morning.

hererra will be interesting. he doesnt have a ton of exoerience at 1b or of but hes actually a decent athlete who has average to above average major league speed while catcher is usually a position of the slowest players. he may dh if he faisl to stick this year but long term will be 1b or lf if he doesnt work out but given another soring to fully transition.
hopefully he sticks at catcher
Re: Three of Eight positions need filled.
despite catcher usually being a slow position. herera has decent speed and is an athlete. i see no reason he couldnt transition to 1b or outfiekd if given a full offseason.Rocket Scientist wrote: ↑09 Feb 2026 09:37 am I don't think Herrera will stick at either catcher or OF er...His best by far tool, is Hitting.
