Cardinals- best infield/outfield in baseball

Post by sikeston bulldog2 »

Good morning.

To me it is becoming clearer the team is focused on a saturation model, currently young pitchers, and middle infielders.

This is a defensive discussion.

Infield- Burleson JJ Winn Gorman/Torres/Saggesse. Not the best. Burleson Torres Winn JJ potential gold glove infield, minus first base. But still good. The debate as usual is JJ- second or third.

Outfield. Seems to be the black hole of the team. However. If Church is a challenge to Scott, why not start in left. Scott in center. Walker in right. This covers 70 percent of the outfield. Walker plays a league average outfield, has the arm, and is or will get better.

This setup is young atheletic and cost controlled. This is based on in house assets, no trades.

About .500 but exciting for a rebuild.

I've said for several months this team better go with defense first, they are not going to score many runs.

The best OF probably was Sanders LF Edmonds CF and Walker RF.

Lonnie Smith LF Willie McGee CF and Hendrivkbin RF

Lou Brock LF Bake McBride CF and Reggie Smith RF was very good

Best defensive outfielders that I have seen have clearly been.

Edmonds
McGee
Andy Van Slyke

Hmmm. Drawing a blank beyond those 3.

Ha you guys got me. Intent. How good will the current infield/outfield be. Seems to be an org focus on the infield.

With Church, and/or Baez, I hear, with Scott forms a good three some. Most teams Cant match the consistency.

Infield. Winn is GG caliber. JJ may be. At second, you are strong all the way up the middle to Catcher.

With JJ at third, maybe, if he sticks, a GG caliber left side, with a very good second baseman- Torres Saggese

Just don't play Gorman at 3B. His throwing accuracy is atrocious.

Ha. I’d agree. And I don’t like his mobility or glove.

And first he has to field it. That's a challenge as well.

Great post, Dog! I think CB will spend a good bit of 2026 focusing on this question. Mo left him with a bunch of decent glove middle infielders and only a handful of OFers. I think he’s hoping that one of Fermin, Ramos, Torres or Saggese can rundown fly balls and hit a cutoff man.

My hope is that gap narrows. Any improvement is a way forward.

Ya know, o hear ya. You’re probably correct. I got this feeling he has a nice bounce back year, and I feel the same for Scott to emerge a bit. Both of these happen, it’s a much more exciting season.
