It’s curious as to how a couple of posters claim Torres doesn't have any speed, when in one minor league season he had 71 stolen bases. He has had 59 steals in two seasons while being in the Cardinals organization. The guy gets on base and scores runs. He actually has been decent at driving in runs too, considering where he usually bats in the order.
The Cardinals need more team speed and ways of generating offense other than hitting home runs, Torres provides that.

We can debate about all he is, and all he ain't. I wonder if we all could agree that he is worth looking at, or if that is too controversial? He does some interesting things. He doesn't do everything. Let's be a little curious and find out (sooner than later for a change).

This is the perfect opportunity for him. They know this season isn't a competitive season, but find out what you have season. This is as thin a competition as he will get. If he doesn't do anything you haven't lost much. If he does, you have a nice useful role player on the team.

He’s a classic late bloomer who has learned a great skill during his travels. He isn’t just good at getting on base, he is elite at it. I’ve said this before, but I think he’ll win a spot in the lineup on opening day and be the Cardinals leadoff hitter for the next four seasons. He’ll post a .370 OBP during that run.

One of Super Slo Mo's two greatest weaknesses was when he fell in love, he fell hard - and would immediately confer privileged status on the object of his affection which resulted in jobs being gifted rather than earned.
I believe Bloom is better than that and will actually allow competition.
Since Bloom made the mistake of trading Donovan without obtaining any potentially viable outfielders in return, and unless he makes the necessary addition in the next few weeks, Torres most certainly should be given fair opportunity to earn a spot.
