NIL and Mizzou Basketball
I just read a post that stated that Mizzou (Gates) could not financially replace Bates and Grill on this years squad. Rather than hijack that thread I thought I'd discuss it here.
Does anyone have any idea what the Mizzou BB NIL is? It would be nice to know just what each player is being paid to come to Mizzou, especially last years recruits. The only one with a pulse is Stone and he was not heavily recruited, probably paid very little for him. If they paid more than meal money for the other 4 they got robbed. Did Mizzou overpay for Ant, Pierce, and Crews? Based on their performance to date, probably.
It seems allocating your NIL money wisely, if limited, is more important than trying to hang onto expensive underperformers. Talent evaluation seems to be a shortcoming with Gates and company rather than NIL dollars. Seems recruiting that diamond in the rough and not overpaying for talent is the key to success if your NIL is limited. Just another factor when hiring a coach nowadays.
Anyone have any knowledge, insight, or opinions into Mizzou BB NIL?

A Google search yielded the following:
Funding Allocation: In 2024, men's basketball received over $2.9 million from the Every True Tiger collective, comprising 23.5% of total athletic department NIL spending.
Future Projections: For the upcoming era of revenue sharing, about $3 million in direct payments is expected for basketball, with potential for an additional $2 million in outside NIL deals.
Major Support: A recent $3 million donation from boosters, Paul and Lynn Ann Vogel, is supporting the Competitive Excellence Fund, directly impacting NIL and program resources.

From the above, that would mean the basketball program has something on the order of $15,000,000 in NIL money.acco40 wrote: ↑08 Feb 2026 12:37 pm A Google search yielded the following:

Because Rod READ A POST that would question that.
Re: NIL and Mizzou Basketball
Based on next year's recruiting class, Mizzou's NIL war chest is competitive anyway.

You mentioned meal money?
I read a while ago that Mizzou paid Sebastian Mack 600K to play this season.
I sure hope it is not true. The guy has done absolutely nothing this season.
If Mack got 600K, how much did Gates pay Jevon Porter? Talk about "free money".
I bet Jevon Porter made more money with NIL than his brother, Michael.
Like you say, Gates and his general manager must be careful who they "fall in love with."
Mack is from Chicago just like Gates and Gates thought he will be a major addition to the team.
Mack sucks but he still walks away with a "wad" of money.
Gates and his GM have to do a better evaluation of players going forward.
I bet Mack transfers and get some more "free money". What a joke!
Re: NIL and Mizzou Basketball
Don't think so. As I understand it, the $2.9 million is 23.5% of the total NIL spending by the athletic department, which would include football and women's basketball as well. I think the (b), the $3 million plus an additional $2 million for basketball, is closer to the actual figures.acco40 wrote: ↑08 Feb 2026 12:40 pmFrom the above, that would mean the basketball program has something on the order of $15,000,000 in NIL money.acco40 wrote: ↑08 Feb 2026 12:37 pm A Google search yielded the following:

The problem this past year was that the one position Gates and company knew they needed to hit on, the 5 position, was simply out of their budget. Quality big men were demanding north of $2 million and there weren't many out there. So they had to go bargain basement with Phillips (again...it was the same with Gray before him, and Vanover before Gray). Did they overpay some returnees? They likely had to pay Mitchell and Robinson major money. Mitchell was a no-brainer and Ant SHOULD have been a no-brainer, since everybody expected him to be the second most important player on the team. I doubt they payed Crews top dollar, and Pierce was probably decent money but not major bucks. I would be surprised if they paid Mack $600,000; he wasn't in real high demand.

Combine the money they paid Mack, Northweather, and Porter and you might have landed one decent player. I suppose they decided to roll the dice, bring in more bodies, and hope they hit on one. Don't understand what they expected from those three, they didn't do much before they got here.straight out of st louis robert ave wrote: ↑08 Feb 2026 18:36 pmLightning Rod,Lightning Rod wrote: ↑08 Feb 2026 12:29 pm I just read a post that stated that Mizzou (Gates) could not financially replace Bates and Grill on this years squad. As a side note, I didn't realize a thigh bruise (Porter) was akin to losing a leg. How long does it take for a bruise to heal? Strange...

I can't confirm this, but I heard on here that they didn't give Norweather any NIL money and they still have a scholly available. When Mizzou had the game won in the last 5 seconds of the game against Bama last year Gates called timeout and pleaded with the fans not to storm the court like they did against Kansas and was booed. He later in an interview said that Mizzou needed that money (major fine) for their NIL. I think the reason that they could afford Crowe and Bryant is because of this new revenue sharing. Transfers are way more expensive than high school recruits. This next transfer portal will determine how well Mizzou is starting to do with funding. Hopefully this new GM is helping in that regard.

If he doesn't play again, it means he had a falling out with Gates.
I remember in a non-conference game, Porter was over by himself away from his teammates.
He looked like he was about to cry. I knew right then that Porter didn't fit in.
Another recruiting mistake by Gates. Maybe Gates ran out of NIL money signing Mitchell and the rest of the players.
I hope Gates learns from his mistakes. Something doesn't add up with Porter!
