Considering last years on base percentages, and career OBP, which of the remaining, healthy, Cardinals would be a better option than VSII? I guess if you go by minors numbers, Torres, Firmin and Prieto could all be options, except only Firmin has decent MLB OBP, albeit in limited exposure. All sorts of players have good OBP in the minors that don't translate to MLB, even VSII had a minors total OBP in the .340's. So, other than putting slow footed high OBP guys like Herrera of Burleson at leadoff, which they may end up doing if no one else steps up, I can't see why they wouldn't give Victor Scott every chance to lead off. Especially, in spring training. I'm sure they'll try a number of players out in ST. One thing for sure about this years spring training, there will be plenty of competitions.Adam2 wrote: ↑09 Feb 2026 10:14 amScott needs to get a LOTTT better before he is considered anywhere near the top of the lineup. Those were the last two players I can remember feeling the way I do about JJ, the feeling that he can be a dominant MLB hitter.
And, I can imagine his competitive spirit and work ethic infecting the rest of the club, and making our club more competitive than many would guess. Definitely a bit of wishful thinking and cartbeforethehorsery, but besides the great stats he just has that it factor. We'll see, but I wouldn't be surprised by ROY, and I also wouldn't be surprised if Bloom has to make a tough decision at the trade deadline because he has this team still in the playoff race.
I really do think he's gonna make everybody around him better, and I am very excited to get this new era started. Go Cardinals!

LOL. going to be 29 years old. Lefty.Jobafish wrote: ↑09 Feb 2026 00:37 am I think Bryan Torres will have something to say about the leadoff spot. He’s hungry. He has a .370 ish OBP. Doesn’t steal, and doesn’t have pop. But, I think he is the main reason Donovan became expendable. The brass secretly like this guy and I look for him to get a good opportunity this spring. If he comes out firing on all cylinders, look for him in the 1 or 9 hole. They would prefer for Saggase to be our utility guy, but confident that Torres can handle it if saggase struggles again. He’s my sleeper pick on opening day.
Hasn't sniffed the bigs

I'm not saying they won't give him a chance. With a good spring training he may end up near the top to start. I just have concerns of him sticking there as a regular all year. But the main concern is what you mentioned, who better? It's a problem if you have to bring up Fermin and Prieto as options. It just shows the lack of MLB ready talent at that position in this organization

Re: Ramblings on JJ
VSII will have to prove in ST that he has improved at the plate. Otherwise he needs to keep batting at the bottom of the order until he shows improved OBP. Noot won't be ready. JJW is unproven as well, and if he does actually hit, then you want him in more of a run producing role given the overall lack of offense in this lineup. A lot will become clearer at the end of ST. It doesn't feel like Bloom et al. are going to sit on their hands like MO did. This is not the year the team will be much over .500, if that. But next year they need to show some improvement.Adam2 wrote: ↑09 Feb 2026 10:36 amDewittDaman11 wrote: ↑09 Feb 2026 10:31 amConsidering last years on base percentages, and career OBP, which of the remaining, healthy, Cardinals would be a better option than VSII? Re: Ramblings on JJ
One positive regarding JJ is that though he bats left handed ... his ability to hit the ball hard to all fields doesn't make him the usual left bat in the lineup .
So for me ,I categorize him as hybrid lefty hitter. Yes, he stands in the left hitter box but creates damage both to LF and RF .
