Is the halftime show dead?

Post by juan good eye »

As many know there will be a different/new halftime show this year promoted by TPUSA as an alternative to the main event.

Note: This OP isn’t in support or against either halftime show.

My argument is that airing/streaming an alternative show for an underserved community can be a *smart* business decision for other platforms, businesses and artists who aren’t the NFL, NFL partners or the SB halftime performers.

Very few events cause the world to take notice the way we collectively stop for the annual SB. Expected viewership in the US alone is 127M+ with the halftime show expected to outperform those numbers.

A big hurdle in business is attracting attention. The SB does an excellent job of getting the masses in front of a screen at the same time waiting for musical entertainment between halfs.

Imagine if major platforms, causes, and other genres (ie not pop music) started catering to their clearly defined customer’s appetite during that ~15 min break in game action.

What do you think? Would you flip channels if one of your favorite artists was playing a live set during SB halftime? Do you think having a competing event is rude?

It’s on. While entertaining, I kept waiting for the Jets to show up.

This isn't the first year that there has been alternative programming for the Super Bowl and the halftime show:

https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertai ... 527208007/

It's unfortunate that close-minded people felt the need for this year's particular action because the chosen act performs only in Spanish. It was a great spectacle with a great message: The only thing more powerful than hate is love.

I'm sure the those who turned the channel will be back on board next year when a more "American" act will play....like U2, the Rolling Stones, The Weeknd, Rihanna, Shakira, Coldplay, The Who, Paul McCartney, Sting....

There's always the option to bring back Up With People.

The question to ask is - why, all of a sudden-like, do we need 'an alternative' ? Was that, like, 'a safe space' for 'snowflakes' or sumpin ? Or perhaps a 'safety valve' so some of their nuts didn't, again, attack the capital or plant some bombs on 'the usual suspects' ?

As watching it, visualized a certain section of the pop's heads' exploding :) Could definitely be considered some manner of spitting in the face of the zeitgeist - which I, personally, took slight schadenfreude concerning, along w/ pity for those who could see only the disruption, but not the creative ferment & energy behind. Liked they didn't even try to whitewash it. It was Puerto Rico/Latin America and nuthin' else (other than, ok, Lady Gaga).

America has always been an ethnic cluster**ck - how most of us, originally, washed up here. The back end of dire circumstance. Many of us just seem to have forgot that. Yesterday was a colorful reminder.
