Trade Rule Question

Post by bluecalgary »

I think this has been answered in the past but... did the NHL stop the trading of players salaries, ie send a player to a team who in turn sends the same player to a third team retaining a part of their salary? Thought I might have seen something where the player had to be on the second team's roster for a few days/games prior to moving them to a 3rd team.

A team has to hold a contract 75 days to prevent the salary retention hack. It doesn't get implemented until 2026-2027 season.

Interesting about the 75 day rule - I kind of wonder what the rationale was behind it. Salary cap space is a commodity and not sure why the rules would limit a team from using every commodity in their power to improve their teams.

It's cap manipulation, looks like they're trying to close the loopholes a bit.

The 75 day rule is in effect for this season. Both Freidman and Chris Johnston have talked about it on their podcasts. So yes, this could hinder some deals this season.
