Keith Law’s Top 20 Cards Propects list released today.

Post by zoiks »

He has the usual suspects at the top of the list (Wetherholt, Doyle, Rodriguez), with Joshua Baez ranked 4th.

From the Donovan trade, Cijntje is ranked 5th. He says Cijntje needs to stop pitching LH. I’ll get excited about him if he shows next season he can get LH hitters out while pitching RH, which he hasn’t done so far, but pitching LH has likely messed up his pitching RH to LH.

Peete is ranked 18th, and Law says that after his terrible season hitting last year, he’s only barely still considered a prospect because of his young age.

Ledbetter is mentioned nowhere in Law’s top 20 Cards prospects or the list of players that just missed being included.

I still don’t think the trade return for Donovan is anywhere near as good as many people are celebrating.

Here’s my favorite part of Law’s article, from the “Others of note” section after the Top 20 list.

“I wrote when the Cardinals acquired infielder Jesus Baez from the Mets in the Ryan Helsley trade that I didn’t think he was a good baseball player despite excellent tools. That’s still true, although he will turn 21 this February and has time to turn it around. He has excellent bat speed and should end up with plus power when he fills out. I saw him multiple times before the trade, while he was with the Mets’ High-A affiliate in Brooklyn, and he was consistent: He didn’t play hard on either side of the ball, including running balls out (the easiest thing to do as a player), and his approach to at-bats was awful. He also showed up out of shape last spring, helping the Mets decide to move him. He is a prospect because he has physical ability, but he has to grow up — and stop swinging at high fastballs all the time — to have any chance to become a big leaguer”

That really sounds promising, doesn't it? 8O Maybe somebody can light a fire in the kid with all the new coaching we have in MILB.

I've not seen anything about Jesus Baez yet that impresses me either. I've found it annoying that he has been list in the top 10 Cardinals prospects on MLB pipeline since he was traded here.

After Walker, Gorman, and even Liberatore I dont trust anything that has to do with prospects.

We are putting a lot on the back of Wetherholt to be our regular 2B for the next 10 years.
