Good morning.
Well Donovan is gone. Long gone Don.
So when do we add. That’s the trick question. Looming lockout. Big speed bump. Major. Timing is everything.
Why would you spend -big- now when you quite possibly may not play a whole season in 27. yes, you don’t pay salaries, but athletes begin to rust with inactivity. Playing your sport is the oil that makes the body/focus work.
My biggest thing will be the inactivity. Followed by hurry up and get ready. Followed by injuries. Timing is everything.
Then. The results of the meetings. This brings the new era. I think we will spend much more after meetings. Plus the new young guns. New system. New parameters.
With any luck, maybe competitive by 28?
Any thing here.
A new era of baseball.

Bleak if you ask me.
They are so far from being competitive it isn't even funny.
Forget 2028, that is is right around the corner.
It will be more like 2030 and longer before they are really competitive.

I agree. It seems bleak. But- what can you and I do. Nothing really. Sit. Wait. Watch.Bully4you wrote: ↑03 Feb 2026 06:17 amThis is a new era for sure.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑03 Feb 2026 06:01 am Good morning.

As an owner, I wouldn’t buy heavy and have a walkout almost guaranteed.
Heres the question. If there was NO lockout joining, would we spend. I think under that scenario it would happen and quicker.

Re: A new era of baseball.
IMO - make the playoffs in 2028, win the NL Central/advance in the playoffs in 2029, and really be a serious WS contender by 2030 (if not 2029) has probably been the expected timeline all along.
If everything goes right maybe that gets sped up by one year. If the rebuild is harder, maybe it gets slowed down by one year.

It's hard to say they'd spend if no lockout.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑03 Feb 2026 06:26 amI agree. It seems bleak. But- what can you and I do. Nothing really. Sit. Wait. This is a drastic reduction.
Not too many players would want to be on this team.
I remember Bloom saying the Cards would be competitive in 2026!!
He was just gaslighting us all along.
Team is a White Sox type joke right now.

The Cards now have the 3rd lowest payroll commitments for 2027 in the MLB.

I hear ya. And see your points. Been there. To me, all this angst leads and comes from one place- the huge Texas mud hole we got ourselves into. Forget the blame. A hole this deep caused us to be - dug down deep. The normal temperature late from the old model couldn’t handle the load. New template. And the biggest upgrade to the template is- time.

Re: A new era of baseball.
I’m curious what impact the possible 2027 Lockout will have on Baseball. The ‘94 Lockout was especially damaging because it actually happened midseason (August 12th), cancelled the World Series, and lasted 257 days (returned April 25, 1995).
The (potential) 2027 Lockout will occur on December 1 of this year, following the expiration of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement. If given the same amount of time, the season would start August 15th.
Now, who knows how long it’d go. MLB JAGs are pretty highly paid (minimum salary $780K for 2026). They’ve known this day would come for a while (let’s say preparing for it since the COVID delayed-start fiasco). So, it’s fair to assume MLBPA could stomach the loss of paychecks. Could they go as far August 15th? At that rate, MLB might as well cancel a full season.
I’m only aware of one major professional US sports league to cancel a full season (2004/5 NHL), where the players had far less bargaining power than MLBPA, widely looked upon as the strongest union in all of sports. So, without government intervention, the loss of a full season might be a reality. So, what damage would that do?
I imagine MLB Owners will find themselves in quite a jam. Already we’ve seen Regional Sports Networks struggle, and Baseball’s popularity decline to now 4th Most Popular, behind Soccer.
For some dumb reason, MLS thought they’d flip their schedule in 2027, so rather than continue that momentum and dominate the summer sports landscape, they will now start their league play in mid-August rather than continue a schedule that saw them start in February and wrap in October (playoffs through November). So, MLB may dodge a slight bullet there.
However, the 1998 Home Run chase is credited with saving baseball… about 4 years after the lockout. Since the records were largely made out of reach by steroids, it kind of begs the question, what saves baseball this time?
