News from Seattle
They just lost their planned #6 starter. Evans had TJ surgery and is out all 2026. They are really thin beyond their starting five. They brought in some pitchers off waivers and minor league free agents to have some depth. Anderson was just drafted and hasn’t played any pro ball yet. Sloan is several years out and so is Cijntje. They had planned on Hancock for the bullpen this year.
This may be a time for the Cards to add a starter to a Donovan deal to get what they want from Seattle. Maybe one of the pitchers they got from Boston could be included or use a third team looking for a catcher or reliever to get a pitcher to include in a deal.
Would the Cards add Mathews to a Seattle deal to get Sloan back? He would give the Mariners a near ready left handed starter that they could throw into the rotation if needed. Sloan fits the Cardinals timeline and would give them a right handed power pitcher with Ace potential. Mathews is closer to the majors but doesn’t have as a high of a ceiling. Mariners could live with that as they have others at the top and Anderson a year or two away. They could use a left handed starter especially one as close as Mathews is to be a middle of the rotation starter.

I find that teams typically don’t value a pitching prospect with a bum shoulder coming off a season where they walked almost a batter per inning. Plus if Mathews is as good a prospect as you say, why would the Cardinals trade him?

Re: News from Seattle
If Seattle is in this win now mode where they the need Donny’s bat and a #6 type starter, wouldn’t they be more interested in Libby or McGreevy instead of Matthews?

Re: News from Seattle
Wouldn't Seattle be more interested in either Fitts or Dobbins since they have some ML experience and a lot of control? Dobbins BTV 11.4 and Fitts BTV 3.7. Donovan is now 30.7 plus Dobbins 11.4 totals 42.1 to Seattle for Sloan, 27 and Arroyo 18.1 totaling 45.1. Seems reasonable. Sloan is RH, 20 and probably starts the year in AA. He is probably not ML ready until 2028. Arroyo I think will be a solid hitter, albeit, some Seattle people think he is a DH. In any case, he is a RH bat who has put up good minor league power numbers and probably starts at AAA this year. If he can stick at 2B, the Cards could end up with a really good hitting infield by 2027.kyace wrote: ↑30 Jan 2026 23:19 pm They just lost their planned #6 starter. I am sure Bloom is working the phones. I would be pretty happy with that trade. Hate to see Donovan go. But adding a potential RH power bat, has merit. Seattle's farm system is ridiculously good. I can certainly understand why they are hesitant to trade from the group. Also pitching is precious because of injuries. They have 3 really great pitching prospects, but it does fall off after that. Gilbert still has 2 years left. Part of their equation has to be which one of those 3 prospects do they think will most be able to contributed in 2028. They probably will not trade that guy no matter what.

That's a good trade for both teams. It has to hurt a little and it does. We might have to bring in another starter fa 1 or 2 year deal. Try and give them Pages.mattmitchl44 wrote: ↑31 Jan 2026 06:13 am BTV

Re: News from Seattle
Logan Evans was on my list of young starting pitchers who I wished the Cardinals would try to obtain in a Donovan trade. Sux that he is now injured. He did start 15 games for the Mariners last season, but they still have 2 young starters who will likely be their 5th and 6th starters this year - Emerson Hancock and Bryce Miller. These two started 16 and 18 games last year, and were also on my coveted list. Now with Evans out for the year, it is almost certain that Seattle will not trade either of those two. The Mariners also recently acquired pitcher Cooper Criswell from Boston, who started 18 games for the Red Sox in '24.
If the Cardinals are going to make a deal with Seattle now, it will most likely be for a prospect pitcher and/or OF.

I agree with “better than any SP the Cardinals could send them.” Disagree with the “ready” part. Hasn’t thrown an inning above High A ball and struggled a bit there:Youboughtit wrote: ↑31 Jan 2026 08:58 amSloan is ready and better than any SP the Cardinals could send themkyace wrote: ↑30 Jan 2026 23:19 pm They just lost their planned #6 starter. Sloan has all of 11 innings at High A. He's ready for North Little Rock at best in the Texas League.

Thats too bad, probably makes them less likely to deal a SP. Anyways, Go Seahawks! Beat the Pedo Pats!kyace wrote: ↑30 Jan 2026 23:19 pm They just lost their planned #6 starter. the numbers align on paper, but the stingiest team in the MLB won't part with their best arms...arguably both are Top 10 best arms in the majors.mattmitchl44 wrote: ↑31 Jan 2026 06:13 am BTV

I would agree that it is hard to imagine Seattle giving up that much in SP prospects in one deal.craviduce wrote: ↑31 Jan 2026 09:22 amthe numbers align on paper, but the stingiest team in the MLB won't part with their best arms...arguably both are Top 10 best arms in the majors.mattmitchl44 wrote: ↑31 Jan 2026 06:13 am BTV
