How to rebuild an NHL roster
This is how Calgary is rebuilding through the draft...
The Calgary Flames are aggressively retooling by leveraging multiple high-value draft picks, including consecutive years with two first-round selections (2024–2027). Following the 2025 selection of Cole Reschny and Cullen Potter, the team is focused on building a new core through a "best player available" (BPA) approach, specifically targeting elite, high-upside prospects.
This is how every other NHL team rebuilds...
Same as Calgary
This is how St Louis rebuilds...
They want players, not picks, because they need the girl scout troop to all be about the same age.
Army is the wrong guy for the job, Sports Fans. It is already quite evident. Study what Army is saying. It ain't good. It's not going to accomplish ZH1T.

Re: How to rebuild an NHL roster
St Louis is not rebuilding LIKE EVERY OTHER NHL TEAM. Their approach was noticeably different even in 2023. The Blues HAVE NOT DRAFTED HIGH in 20 years!!!
It's way past time to ask why. Nothing changes in St Louis hockey, until the management approach changes.
It's not fair to St Louis fans to suffer through this horrid season, and then PROVIDE NO SOLID PROVEN PLAN to climb out of this. We're not needing a happy girl scout troop the same age.

Re: How to rebuild an NHL roster
They certainly could use another 2023 like draft class with 3 first rounders. That assumes you can get a 1st for Schenn and Faulk which should be easy if we retain salary. I don't mind pushing to try to get a great prospect instead of a 1st rounder though. He can play his hand as hard as he'd like but he can't walk away emptyhanded. Getting to the other side of this TDL with those players still on the roster would be a setback for this organization getting back to contention.

Re: How to rebuild an NHL roster
In most cases, when an NHL team SELLS, the prize goal is high draft choices in return. There are exceptions to this such as ROR for Tage Thompson.LGB73 wrote: ↑29 Jan 2026 08:38 am They certainly could use another 2023 like draft class with 3 first rounders. So the question is...
Who is the Tage Thompson coming back for Faulk, Kyrou, or even Thomas? I don't see it. Consequently I want picks to try to find that star.
And the next question is...
Why is Army telling the other NHL GMs, that HE ONLY WANTS PLAYERS, NOT PICKS! Why would he say this? There are not many Tage Thompsons laying around. Why would you "rule out" draft picks!!!!

I'd love to entertain one of these threads as legitimate. But It's hilariously bad at this point. In this thread, IT is saying Thomas isn't good enough to trade for Tage Thompson. Thomas who was considered by may around the league to be a borderline top 10 center (most have him right behind suzuki or right in front). The Blues DRAFTED Tage Thompson with the 26th overall pick. Who did that? Army. This Bot is so broken. IT can't even put 2 coherent sentences together.
In reality, what I would like to do is see what you can get for Schenner if he is open to trade. It's his choice. 3rd line next year, or get traded. And then you have to trade 1 of either Kyrou or Thomas. You can't really replace Thomas, so I'd just figure out the Kyrou trade and just settle for whatever you can get. The last option which I don't like this year is Faulk. If you can get a good lot coming back for Faulk, then do it, but that necessitates signing someone next year which slows the avenue for Jiricek to have a free runway to take over at the end of next year or the year after. Makes more sense to just hold on to Faulk as an asset this year, and trade him next year. Unless LM fails miserably next year. Trading Faulk 1 year early better bring in the value appropriate because it leaves your team hamstrung next year and not in the ideal space for Jiricek.
Re: How to rebuild an NHL roster
I hear you on Faulk and have had the same thoughts. I just think it's time that this team realizes it needs a bigger infusion of prospects in the pipeline. If we retain half his salary, the return should justify the issues next year. I'm more concerned with getting back to respectable perennial playoff team than what next year looks like.callitwhatyouwant wrote: ↑29 Jan 2026 11:01 amLGB73 wrote: ↑29 Jan 2026 08:38 am They certainly could use another 2023 like draft class with 3 first rounders. Between Kyrou and Thomas, you keep Thomas. We're so shallow at the C position that we need to add to it not subtract. If Thomas is a 2C so be it, but he's probably the best 2C in the league. I'll give him this year as a an off one.
Could we get Danielson out of Detroit(Hage out of Montreal) if we send them both Faulk and Schenn on 50% retention? That's a lot of veteran presence for those young playoff teams on cheap cap hits. We need to get another legit C if we're going to spend our 1st rounder hopefully on Stenberg/Mckenna.

Build a roster:
a)Goalie out (Hofer, check)
b)Defense (Broberg, Lindstein, Jiricek, Mailloux, Ralph, Burns, check)
c)Down the middle (Thomas, Dvorsky, xxxx, Stancl)
d) Winger (Holloway, Neighbours, Stenberg, Snuggerud, Carbonneau, Kaskimaki, Dean, check)
e) Coach (Monty)

I watched an interview with Rutherford a few days ago and two other guys (I forgot what it was called). I left that interview really pessimistic as they were talking about hockey trades still and this Rutherford interview was one like 24 hours after it originally aired. Rutherford has been widely considered as someone with legitimate inside information and if they are still thinking this way, man we may be in for decades worth of suffering. They were talking specifically about using Thomas to get a goaltender to go with Hofer. I honestly don't know what to say if your priority right now is goaltender and not upgrading the talent to elite level and young.
I hope they aren't thinking like Rutherford indicated because we desperately need a talent upgrade that only suffering and high drafting is likely to bring. I really wouldn't waste assets like Thomas for instance on a goaltender especially since goaltenders don't tend to bring you much in trades.

Others can disagree but JR is a step above click bait for me. They can sign a veteran back up goalie if they manage to move BinnieMandatoryDenial wrote: ↑29 Jan 2026 12:12 pmYeah it was him and a guy named ferrario on a podcast I want to say it was 101.Harry S Deals wrote: ↑29 Jan 2026 12:10 pmAre you talking about Jeremy Rutherford??????MandatoryDenial wrote: ↑29 Jan 2026 12:00 pmHarry S Deals wrote: ↑29 Jan 2026 11:37 am Build a roster:
