FT%

Post by JackBolly »

When Self was at IL he said a team FT% of less than 70% was unacceptable. According to ESPN, MU sits at 66.8% or last in the SEC and 340 out of 365 teams. The average for the SEC is 78%, for the B1G is 74.8%, for the ACC is 71.6%. For MU to be that far behind in team FT% should be unacceptable and shows a lack of emphasis on a fundamental part of the game.

Actually it show lack of desire to win on the part of the players. FT practice is something you do on your own. You take your own time not team time to get your FT shooting up to par. It YOU standing there for 20 minute to and hour every day making sure that your stroke is sound so that under pressure your muscle memory does it's thing. You should also hit 10 -20 FT at the arena where you're playing so that you are used to the look and feel of a new environment. This is just a lack of desire to push yourself to be better.

I will make a not about the Bama game in particular, EVERYONE was missing FTs. Ant and an air ball and I mean didn't even scrape the net then barely got the the front of the rim and the second one. Mitchell I think missed his first 4 in a row. I think there was something that the players couldn't get used to about that arena.

Mediocre FT% doesn't appear to have affected anyone's PT - a lack of emphasis on fundamentals. Many of our paid BB players appear to believe they are pro material, even NBA material. I've been to NBA games where the journeyman players come out over an hour pregame and do nothing but practice their shots and FT's. What you describe is not a lack of desire to win, but rather a lack of basic work ethic.

The worse thing about a Tuesday loss is you get three days of trolling before the next game by posters like the two above.

Heck, onemizzou didn't even post once after the Oklahoma win.

Why should it affect their playing time? Gates has 7 players at this point who can play D-1 basketball after a fashion. Is he going to bench them and put in the scrubs?

This is a matter of the players who are most likely to draw fouls are the least likely to make free throws. Phillips, Mitchell, and now Robinson. Mitchell's whole game is taking it to the hole and either scoring or drawing a foul. But somebody back about his sophomore year in high school should have corrected his horrible form shooting free throws and threes, for that matter. Same, even worse, with Phillips. I'm not a high school coach and I have no idea what it's like to coach high school kids...but if I was, I'd be working with these players back then and getting their stroke corrected to where they have an actual chance to be decent free throw shooters. It's way too late now.

If i read Gates face correctly he was as disgusted as any of us with that last games effort at the FT line.

As he should be.

Way back when I was in the 8th grade, my coach made us run sprints and then shoot free throws. There's a big difference between shooting them when you're tired versus shooting them when you're not. My 8th grade team shot better than this team. That's sad.

Don't even get me started on free throws. Mitchell was 1-8! ? That's Wilt Chamberlain territory, but Wilt was still scoring 30, 40, 50 a game. Mitchell's stock is falling, fast.

I thought that was implied in what I said. I guess not, but I agree.

Last year Bates was 94.6% and Grill 86.4%. That's a big reason for the drop-off.

Phillips - 45%. Why put him out there until? His only ability is putting the ball on the floor when he shouldn't.
Mitchell - 65.6%. He was 67% last year and 62.2% his last year at Duke, so this is who he is. (Oddly, he was 76.3% in his first year?!)
Robinson - 67.6%. He was 77.1% last year so this is a big drop off.
All the subs are sub-60%.

Barrett, Crews and Stone are the only ones who are halfway decent.

It ain't just FTs. It's poor offensive sets, poor passing, too many bonehead TOs, poor 3-point D.

The biggest thing you have ever implied is that you're actually a Mizzou fan, simply because you use mizzou in your screen name.

It seems that Gates's philosophy is that he'll give up the occasional open three to stop scoring in the paint. Sometimes that works, and Mizzou's inside defense is pretty good most games. Today, there were no serious inside threats for MS State, so they worked a lot harder defending the three because Hubbard and Epps were almost the whole offense. They only gave up one open three to Hubbard and a couple to Epps on miscommunications. They also gave up a few to others who the scouting report said aren't good from three, and those others made a couple and missed several.
