I still can’t see the logic of trading your arguably best player on the team (albeit, not a superstar), for good prospects. Hear me out
Donovan at 28-29, has probably up to 5 more years of good production. He’s valuable no matter where he plays. you know what you got with this player, and can expect more. Now, you trade him for a group of prospects that, as you know, have probably a 50-50 shot at succeeding in the Majors. And that may still take 2-3 more seasons to “find out”.
I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t run a club that way. Now, open the purse strings and find a good rh-hitting outfielder, and let’s play ball - competitive
But - if Donovan d3clines an extension - trade him at the break
17 days til Spring Training... Bernie weighs in on Donovan

Maybe he has already declined an extension. They did approach him last offseason. The Nard wrote: ↑28 Jan 2026 08:52 am I still can’t see the logic of trading your arguably best player on the team (albeit, not a superstar), for good prospects. Hear me out

Ahh Talkin' Baseball , finally another poster who has thought of the possibility that Donovan does not wish an extension . I mentioned this a few times yet it hasn't gotten any traction. Some of those wanting Donovan retained often say ... Keep him and extend him . We just don't know if Donovan is open to that rather than testing free agency . As you said, the subject was reportedly discussed a year ago and we did not hear if there was mutual interest. If he doesn't want an extension with St. Louis , then that should change the dynamics of retaining him this year . Get the best deal for him now while healthy .Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑28 Jan 2026 09:13 amMaybe he has already declined an extension. You can be certain that has not escaped the attention of Donovan, or his agent, how many teams are interested in his services.ramfandan wrote: ↑28 Jan 2026 09:18 amAhh Talkin' Baseball , finally another poster who has thought of the possibility that Donovan does not wish an extension . Something has to happen. They can't have Donovan, Gorman, Nootbaar and JJ all on the team.
