St. Louis CITY SC Acquires Midfielder Daniel Edelman from New York Red Bulls

Image
St. Louis CITY SC has acquired midfielder Daniel Edelman from New York Red Bulls (NYRB) in exchange for $500,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM) and $200,000 in 2027 GAM. NYRB could receive up to another $150,000 in conditional GAM if certain performance metrics are met. NYRB also retains a percentage of any future sale or trade of Edelman.

“Daniel is a ball-winning, high-intensity midfielder whose addition will bring even more competition to our midfield group,” said Sporting Director Corey Wray. “He has played significant MLS minutes despite his young age and has shown maturity in his performances. We believe he can continue to develop and take another step at this level. We are looking forward to welcoming him to St. Louis as we continue to build out our roster with talented players.”

So 4 yellow cards in 2022. 5 yellow cards in 2023. 8 yellow cards and one red card in 2024. 5 yellow cards in 2025.

Not going to win the Fair Play award.

Sounds like another Durkin...wreckless play and stupid fouls! We need playmakers in the midfield not hacks.

5.5 yellow cards on average per year is hardly eye catching for a defensive midfielder. As far as a midfield set up is concerned, you need playmakers, distributors, and typically a defensive minded player. Given Durkin's injuries it makes sense to add depth at this position. Perhaps, the idea is that Edelman will play besides Durkin, thereby giving Louen more positional freedom and the ability to more forward more. The defense was in shambles last year, adding a defensive minded midfielder doesn't seem like the worse idea in the world.

Right!? Especially over 26 Games… he’d have been 4th on the ‘25 club, behind such disasters like Edu Lowen, who had 6 (and a Red) across 28 Matches.
