Did you witness this rarity at Busch in 2025 ?
Cardinals hitting a Triple !
In 81 home games, it happened just 3 times . For the season (home & away ) ,the Cardinals had a total of 9 triples. Dead last in all of MLB
In our own division , here is how many triples each team had for their HOME games
Cubs 18 Pirates 14 Brewers 12 Reds 10 Cardinals 3
for the season , Cubs 29 , Reds 23 , Pirates 21 , Brewers 18 , Cardinals 9
How does 9 compare to all the National League teams ? Well, the 2nd worst team had 18 (Padres )
Do we lack extra base hits to gaps, corners etc. Not really , the Cardinals ranked 6th in doubles in all of MLB.
Lack of top speed ? Does our 3rd base coach lack aggressiveness to waive the runner to 3rd ?
Do some hitters not bust it out of the box on gapper or corner hit ball ?
Here are our top extra base hits and how they did on triples vs. double : Top 5 Cardinals in doubles listed below )
Donovan 32 doubles .. 0 triples Not one time did he get to 3rd
Contreras 31 " 1 triple
Winn 27 doubles 0 triples
Burleson 22 " 2 triples
Nootbaar 24 doubles 1 triple
So congratulations if you were one of the lucky fans to see one of the 3 triples hit at Busch Stadium last year . Yes , fans love to see HR's watching the batter jogging around the bases but one of the most thrilling offensive plays is the triple.
Runner motoring 270 ft from home plate to 3rd base . It is quite the rarity for the Cardinals .

Nice find. 29 th in HR. Now triples. Plus we don’t play small ball. Plus we don’t run.ramfandan wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 07:16 am Cardinals hitting a Triple !

How do we score then?

Surprised that Burleson would be the team leader at 2.
We really need Winn and Scott to step it up.

No surprise. I think we can all agree that this was/is a pretty boring team.

I can remember when Tim McCarver led the league in triples with 13 and of course we all know he was a catcher.Francis Park Thug wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 07:41 am No surprise. I think we can all agree that this was/is a pretty boring team.

Rare ndeed. Most triples associated with speed. Wonder if his 13 triples were all to the same spot on the field. Would love to see that spray chart.OldRed wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 08:08 amI can remember when Tim McCarver led the league in triples with 13 and of course we all know he was a catcher.Francis Park Thug wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 07:41 am No surprise. Winn with zero triples, and Scott with only 1 is an extremely bizarre stat. With their speed, they have got to do better than this.

But ask yourself, what makes a triple? Doesn’t ball on field make a difference. Position of fielder. EV of hit, gaps, etc. ball park configuration.

Re: Did you witness this rarity at Busch in 2025 ?
I think Masyn’s injured knee, and Donovan’s injury, caused them to hit few triples, but as to the rest of the line up? I think a lot is their hitting approach. They tend to hit from gap to gap, and not line to line. A lot of triples come from hitting the ball into the corners, and that’s not something they do well. The other thing of course, is they do not have a ton of team speed.
Scott needs to be more of a line drive hitter, and not a guy constantly hitting fly balls to the warning track.

Heres an idea, maybe they simply don’t hit the ball hard enough. Just as a corner shot leads to triples, so do shots to the RF gap. If it makes it to the wall, Scott should be a threat.Hoosier59 wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 08:21 am I think Masyn’s injured knee, and Donovan’s injury, caused them to hit few triples, but as to the rest of the line up? But if fielders cut those balls off, maybe a double. Maybe.

McCarver was only 24 when he led the league in triples, and for a catcher, he was a fast baserunner. He did it in 66, and 6 of those triples were hit at the spacious new Busch Stadium.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 08:16 amRare ndeed. Most triples associated with speed. So, 6 at home and 7 on the road. Still a great accomplishment for any position player, especially a catcher.12xu wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 08:29 amMcCarver was only 24 when he led the league in triples, and for a catcher, he was a fast baserunner. IMO when the ball lands in play the runner has to be running hard while thinking it's a double or triple and you are going for it.
You don't pull up to soon with this mindset.
Most Cards runner don't appear to be busting (bleep) to extend the play.

And there it is. You gotta think triple to get a triple. It’s from the first step out of the box.

I noticed that Al Hrabosky had hit a triple one time. So I asked him how that happened. He said “it was at Wrigley Field and the ball disappeared into the ivy. It took the outfielder 10 minutes to find it.”

Triples leaders for a career. Interesting list.
