Re: List of non-roster ST invites
Do any of these guys crack the OD roster?
My guess:
JJW
And 1 or 2 of the LHP for the pen.
(I'll go with Thompson and Packy/Schuster)

A couple of years ago, it appeared that Thompson had it figured out. Then injuries have derailed him. I am guessing this is his last chance. He is forgotten on this board and by almost everyone. But if he has recovered, he has high end stuff. He could be a dark horse for the rotation or at the very least the swingman. A potential upside surprise guy. In 2023 he struck out 72 in 66 IP. He also started 9 games and did OK. Lets see if he is ready to go and has anything left.

Not only does he make ODR .. he is slated to be Opening Day starter as well . He is not making the team to 'sit' on the bench . He is an 'everyday ' player . Sure he will have his off days like every other guy but his 'bat' will play .ICCFIM2 wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 00:50 amI hope JJ makes the ODR.Cardinals4Life wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 00:31 amDo any of these guys crack the OD roster?

I think that you are right, Dan. JJW is probably a better player than most of the infielders on the 40-man. What I'm really hoping for this spring is a good old fashioned competition for roster spots and starting jobs. I'd love to see a competition for starting at 1B, 2B (if BD is gone), 3B and the bench. We may still be putting warm bodies in the outfield for a while yet.ramfandan wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 07:54 amNot only does he make ODR .. he is slated to be Opening Day starter as well . JJW is a slam dunk.
If he's not the OD starting 2nd baseman and in the lineup for as many games as he can handle, then somethings really wrong here.

I don't see Thompson in the mix as a starter. I do however think that he was brought back to compete for a LHP spot in the Pen. This is a role where he had some success until the FO jerked him around and sent him back down to be a starter. His poor handling was very similar to that of Liberatore's. After his injuries last year, let's hope he can reclaim that bullpen role and find success there!

Re: List of non-roster ST invites
JJW makes the ODR if he has a very good Spring. It's all contingent on that. I think they want him to make it, but they won't give him a spot if he doesn't show-out in Spring Training. One man's opinion.

Anyone of Thompson, Matthews, Packy , Henderson and of course JJ could make the 26 players opening day roster.

I am with you. I would be surprised if he is in the rotation, but I expect him to make the roster and to be good.ICCFIM2 wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 00:50 amI hope JJ makes the ODR.Cardinals4Life wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 00:31 amDo any of these guys crack the OD roster?

Interesting that they don't want Doyle there for just the first couple of weeks before heading to the minor league camp... I know he will not be in the bigs this year, but thought they would let him come to the first part of ST...

Re: List of non-roster ST invites
I thought I read or heard Derrick Goold say something about bringing him along slowly and making sure he is working on his secondary pitches. I could have gotten that wrong, but that was my impression. I thought he also mentioned that he may start the year in A+. Sorry if that's wrong, but I swear I heard that on his podcast.bccardsfan wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 10:06 am Interesting that they don't want Doyle there for just the first couple of weeks before heading to the minor league camp... I think all college all stars need to play at least a year of pro ball before their MLB callup.Ronnie Dobbs wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 10:18 amI thought I read or heard Derrick Goold say something about bringing him along slowly and making sure he is working on his secondary pitches. I think he should start in AA, I think that level's fine. But he should definitely focus on his secondaries.BrockFloodMaris wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 12:29 pmI think all college all stars need to play at least a year of pro ball before their MLB callup.Ronnie Dobbs wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026 10:18 amI thought I read or heard Derrick Goold say something about bringing him along slowly and making sure he is working on his secondary pitches.
