Gate's interviews
I have always been riding the fence on Gates, much better than what we have had before but does not seem to have the guts to take over and control his team. He is way over psychological on everything he says and boring as hell. He reminds me a lot of the guy on the natural telling the players "losing is a disease".. Just wish he would man up and take charge

Re: Gate's interviews
Abner needs to man up and go tell that to Gates in person.
Then he will see how Gates takes charge.

It was good he sat Robinson in the bench yesterday in place of TO. A wake up call was definitely needed for Ant. Hopefully, message received!abnerdoubled wrote: ↑25 Jan 2026 11:47 am I have always been riding the fence on Gates, much better than what we have had before but does not seem to have the guts to take over and control his team. Also, TO has earned another start!

With Crowe arriving next season, I wouldn't mind if Robinson hit the portal. He's getting worse, not better.Cardinals4Life wrote: ↑25 Jan 2026 13:17 pmIt was good he sat Robinson in the bench yesterday in place of TO. A wake up call was definitely needed for Ant. In his post-game interview, reliably uncritical assistant coach Dickey Nutt said, basically, that Coach Gates had given the team hell at halftime.abnerdoubled wrote: ↑25 Jan 2026 11:47 am I have always been riding the fence on Gates, much better than what we have had before but does not seem to have the guts to take over and control his team. Re: Gate's interviews
I think that's a little harsh. He is clearly in charge of the team, and doing a good job, IMO.abnerdoubled wrote: ↑25 Jan 2026 11:47 am I have always been riding the fence on Gates, much better than what we have had before but does not seem to have the guts to take over and control his team. Re: Gate's interviews
I still say that Gates needs to leave! He's a darn good coach that gets more out of less the same way that Pinkel did. His first team as coach here was cheaply put together and they won 25 games and made it to the 2nd round of the dance. People still complained about him and dogged him for losing to Princeton with his thrown together team to Princeton who beat a 4-seeded Arizona in the 1st round. Many so-called fans dogged him out on these sport's forums and a few called him a racist (Slimy) This guy isn't getting the financial NIL backing like Drink and he has to shop in the budget basement for his players. (I was going to name a few players and decided not to) People complained about them losing to Drake the same team that beat Vandy last year by the same amount of points. Follow Iowa today which is the school where those Drake players and coach went to and notice that they are a top 25 team.
We never replaced Bates and Grill and really our talent regressed with the exception of Stone who we were lucky to get, because he didn't play last year with WVU because he was hurt. (Didn't have any suitors) The basketball team needs NIL backing and I hope the new GM will help us get that. Until the team can get that help I will always compare Gates to Pinkel in getting more out of less. (This is my opinion)

He meant Gates doesn't need to leave. He is doing a good job with limited NIL money.Rantz wrote: ↑25 Jan 2026 19:08 pmSo why does Gates need to leave?TheMajicMan wrote: ↑25 Jan 2026 18:34 pm I still say that Gates needs to leave! Have you not seen all the personal hate and personal attacks on social media? Some are racial. A heck of a lot of people everyday are calling for him to be fired. If he leaves I guarantee you he will be swooped up by a decent school.

Yeah, I don't get all the hate for HCDG. The guy has had two really good teams here, and one really bad one. Injuries really hurt that bad team, but of course injuries are part of the deal. I've liked him since he got here. I like his recruiting. I like the fact that he doesn't rant and rave on the sidelines. I like his results (2 of the 3 years). I like the suits he wears. I just like him!

Re: Gate's interviews
When it was disclosed Gates was one of the candidates being considered I predicted he would get the job.
Up and coming coach relating to players and mentored by Leonard Hamilton and he wasn't going to cost a lot.
He's still learning as most all coaches do. He's a little more animated now than in past seasons and perhaps a little more discipline and accountability needs to be demanded of his players and staff.
I believe the program is better off than it was under Martin and is a more entertaining product.
Now if we could just rebound, and guard the perimeter better.

You have octogenarians having to deal with a black man in a position of authority.Sophrosyne wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 06:54 am Yeah, I don't get all the hate for HCDG. It's not that hard to recognize.
Re: Gate's interviews
Maybe the rebounding is looking up? Outrebounded the Sooners 41-29. Phillips had 9 and Mitchell 10. And here's part of the key: Stone chipped in 7, and Barrett 6. Both use their athleticism and nose for the ball at guard to get boards. And when they played Florida, the top rebounding team in the nation, they were even on the boards at 37 apiece.11WSChamps wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 10:10 am When it was disclosed Gates was one of the candidates being considered I predicted he would get the job.

And the Tigers aren't horrific by any means in rebounding. They are 69th in rebounding margin at +4. Out of 361 D1 teams.
Now the 3-point D is another matter.

Such a stupid and shallow comment, but considering the source it's about what I would expect. Cue cockroach.winonsports wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 10:21 amYou have octogenarians having to deal with a black man in a position of authority.Sophrosyne wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 06:54 am Yeah, I don't get all the hate for HCDG. Don’t make it an age thing. If one is racist, I doubt they’re much of a basketball fan. As an outsider, it appears Gates runs a clean program. I like how he handles himself during games and with the media. I know next to nothing about his assistants.winonsports wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 10:21 amYou have octogenarians having to deal with a black man in a position of authority.Sophrosyne wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 06:54 am Yeah, I don't get all the hate for HCDG.
