Of the widely-followed prospect analysts out there, Law seems to be the most bullish on Doyle. Hope he’s right.

It's interesting, the wide variations in evaluations of the young players. It really illustrates the value and opportunity available to an organization if they can be more accurate in identifying the prospects and the suspects.

Yes, some evaluators , scouts prefer a position player who has power in their offensive game. They want the kid who can hit the 25 or more HRs .Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 09:15 am It's interesting, the wide variations in evaluations of the young players. Others put less value on the power and say GIve me a kid who hits the ball to all fields , consistent higher bat avg. strikes out seldom , plays good D
an all round very good player but not a guy who jacks it out of the park as much. Some view JJ as more the high floor but not as high ceiling type.
Some teams love his type while others say , I will take the kid who can give me the 30 HR's .

Yeah, and being a Cards fan and after watching the struggles of Walker and Gorman, I would go for the Wetherholt types all day every day.ramfandan wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 09:27 amYes, some evaluators , scouts prefer a position player who has power in their offensive game. 3 in the top 30. That's pretty good, FWIW

I do wonder, just a smidge, did Law intentionally leave off Baez to poke the bear. He does like him some Cardinal Fan Conflict. It's been a while, maybe he missed the Vocal Few from the Lou.
He probably didn't do it intentionally....Baez's ratings are all over the place....there's believers, there's those who need Baez to back up the season to prove it wasn't an outlier, and then there's those who feel last season was in fact an outlier.
Oh well...life goes on.

Quote on JJ:
“He’s the National League prospect about whom I’d feel most confident saying that he’ll win a batting average title some day.“
Quote on Doyle:
“ He’ll probably start in Double A, but don’t be surprised if he debuts this year as long as he stays healthy, with at least No. 2 starter upside.”
Quote on Raniel:
“If he stays a catcher, he’s an All-Star, and if he doesn’t, he might still be one because he’s going to have so much impact with the bat. He’ll be 19 all of this year and if he plays a full season, I think he’ll lead all minor-league catchers in homers.”

Those are some pretty high praise quotes on those 3, wow. Doyle has, at least, number 2 upside potential. Nice

and a very low floor as a set up man. He's a helluva gamble for a #5 pick. Fingers crossed!!!TraveledLessRoad wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 11:04 am Those are some pretty high praise quotes on those 3, wow. Doyle has, at least, number 2 upside potential. Nice

Maybe I’m biased loving in Tennessee for retirement but watched Doyle’s pitching at UT. I too think Doyle will be called up later in 2026. The Madman makes his debut. I’m currently very skeptical about Baez. Hitters with huge K% numbers for several minor league seasons usually are who they are. Remember when Gorman supposedly fixed his K problem when he had 1 decent partial season for K%? If Baez repeats his hitting stats from last season again this season, then I’d consider him worthy of being included in a top 100 MLB prospects list.craviduce wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 10:15 am I do wonder, just a smidge, did Law intentionally leave off Baez to poke the bear. Re: Baez...I think many people share this same sentiment. Including me. I hope last year is the new him and a starting point going froward. But, i too would like to see it a second year in a row.

Heady stuff from a guy not known as a Cardinals bootlicker.ClassicO wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 10:58 am Quote on JJ:

Re: 3 Cards Prospects on Keith Law’s Updated Top 100 MLB Prospects List
A lot of the top power hitting prospects have high K%. Look at Montes with Seattle, their #3 overall prospect and a 55 Grade Prospect, 169Ks in 490ABs but he also had 83BBs. By comparison Baez had 103Ks in 418ABs with 59BBs. Montes had more games at AA than Baez. Both of these guys could be busts, both could be superstars. That is the reason why the Cards need 3 guys like this in the system, they have to hope 1 becomes a superstar even if the other 2 bust out.TraveledLessRoad wrote: ↑26 Jan 2026 12:27 pm Re: Baez...I think many people share this same sentiment. Wetherholdt is likely to be Donovan with more pop and perhaps a bit better fielder. I am expecting a guy with an 800-850 OPS with 15-20 HRs a year. Donovan was a 750-775 OPS guy with 10-15 HRs per year. If Wetherholdt does that, he is a fixture for the Cards, a difference maker even if not an other worldly superstar. Baez has a much wider range of outcomes. But, a guy that hit 20HRs with 50+ SBs last year in the minor leagues with 400 ABs should have us all excited about the possibilities. The Cards have a potential 30-30 player which I think would be the first 30-30 player the Cards have ever had. He is a potential other worldly superstar.
