What exactly is "game planning strategy"?

Post by ScotchMIrish »

Yadi will provide input on our catching program, will advise our staff on catching and game planning strategy, and will give me and our front office valuable perspective from his unique vantage point.

Glad to have Molina connected to the team again but I'm curious what that is. My impression of successful managers is they watched what was happening on the field and adjusted accordingly.

You know….todays young players have only been coached to Launch And Spin….and have no real clue how to play the GAME
It’s similar to taking a long drive champ and attempting to have them play 18 on a course

Believe the 'game planning strategy' is the strategy devised for the opposition lineup PRIOR to the game. Coaches do video analysis , study spray charts of each hitter etc. the day prior to a game and set the game plan (similar to a NFL team who designs what off. plays will work vs the opposing defense )
A for example .. When teams plan for a Harrison Bader , they want their pitcher to know his greatest strength is not only a fastball hitter but analytics show he goes after the high zone fastballs and can really drive it . So let's use Liam Doyle , our no. 1 pick , as pitcher who would face Bader the next day . His bread and butter pitch is the high heater top of the zone to strike guys out . A Molina in 'game planning' would tell Doyle .. don't challenge Bader with your high fastball..that is what he is looking for .. So go with the lower breaking balls, changeups , secondary pitches on the first couple pitches . If you get a couple strikes on him , maybe throw the heater but throw it low corner or just outside .. make him chase whatever.
That would be example of 'game planning ' that Yadi would be doing and telling not only his pitcher but his catcher for that day how they plan to 'pitch Bader ' for that day . WIthout informing the catcher and pitcher of the game plan , bingo one mistake and the ball leaves the yard .

Both are part of strategy….

The pitchers and catchers meet to discuss to every opposing hitter

along the lines of “pitch this guy in and don’t hang that slider”

The manager adjusts by removing the pitcher because he keeps hanging that slider….

What other sports do you feel like teams shouldn’t strategize before games? Football? Basketball?

Is all strategic planning just a big waste of time?

You gotta think, especially in losing teams or seasons, much of this pregame stuff is mere going through the motions.

For instance- what does an NBA team talk about? Who to stop, and who to get the ball today. That can be done over breakfast.

Yep

Pitching Coach/Catchers/Pitchers go over how to attack hitters, who they want to pitch around, situations, ect.....

Dunc' use to comment about Yadi being outstanding at game planning.

I disagree to an extent. There are more motivations in play. Players want to get better. They want to make more meaningful impact. They want their next contract. So you always need to be working on getting better. There is a real discipline involved, here.

Yes.

Also I have to believe defensive positioning and how to attack opposing pitchers would be part as well.

And, yes, possible in-game adjustments would also be a thing.

And yea we are sure there is a kevel of pregame planning. But let’s not discount all the moves and changes made through out the game, pitch by pitch, hitter by hitter.

Just be cause you plan something doesn’t mean the scenerio will allow it.

Gotta be fluid.

Correct.
Data has changed the game.
Companies now rely very heavily on data analysts for their own version of day-to-day game planning.
There is simply too much information for executives to effectively process.
Baseball is no exception.
Which is why the sport has seen the introduction of new roles.
Such as game planning coach.

Pitch sequencing is a part of it. Something a lot of staffs have gotten away from. Dave Duncan was big on it and arguably a big reason for his success as a pitching coach.
