How many losses are too much for Bloom?

Post by RichieRichSTL »

To stick with Oli?

No one expects them to contend this year. They will be closer to 70 wins than 90. But, there does come a point at which even Bloom can't ignore a level of 'failure'.

I think triple digit losses could be too much, even on a rebuilding team.

Bloom was brought here to do a job. He was tasked with tanking the team and he has a long rope. His job is to fool the rubes into thinking that he's building a mythical beast to be unleashed after a few years of tanking. It's going according to the billionaires schedule. The fans be damned.

So….you are agreeing that the first 90 losses are because of the poor roster.

but the last 10 are the manager’s fault?

Not my experience..

Some have questionable priorities……at least by my values…

You are if you believe tanking will bring you a World Series title. It's only worked a couple of times and one of those was Houston's cheating scandal. The other was a thin skinned late inning victory that could have just as easily went the other way. Tanking only guarantee's losing.

I feel like the term "tanking" is dated now that the draft lottery is in place. Losing the most games doesn't guarantee you the top pick or even a top 5 pick. I'm also not overly concerned with the long range models people throw out and discuss on here regarding prospect accumulation, data points needing to be met in order to "compete" for a WS title. I don't necessarily think Bloom is looking to go the extremes a lot of posters fret about. I look at things through more of a right here, right now lens.

This team has been DOA the last 3 seasons with our last playoff appearance coming in 2022. We finished 4th in the NL Central last year, a division that sent 3 teams to the playoffs. We were 19 games behind the Brewers. I find getting rid of Gray, Arenado and Contreras refreshing. Those 3 made up the core of what we've been watching as fans the last 3 seasons. The roster shake up was sorely needed, now we all get to move forward.

Is there ever a thread that is not loaded with gloom and doom? It's January and some are trying to predict when the manager is going to be fired. For crying out loud, give the young team a chance to see if they can produce a little excitement.

I think Mo may have had Oli's hands tied to a point last year. We can only hope that Bloom and Oli are on the same page and work together on a plan. Just like Mo's roster, I think Oli's managing was a result of Mo.

The past few years we saw some real boring baseball. Im expecting that the younger guys are going to make this team a little more exciting. Thinking outside the box a little bit more, and give us something to cheer about, but these threads trying to predict the date that this team flies in to the side of the mountain is crazy

Here, in the NE we're having -20 ° weather this weekend, with 1-3 feet of snow predicted. Give me summertime with younger players trying to make a name for themselves. It will be fun!

Sadly we're stuck w/Oli for all of 2026.

Hopefully no more than a one year extension (I'd have fired him years ago, he keeps talking about an extension).

The hope is after a new CBA is in place he's fired during or immediately after the 2027 and C. Bloom is allowed to hire his Manager.

It's not tanking. They aren't losing on purpose to get a high draft pick. They are forced to tear down the smoldering remains left over from Mo to create a new foundation.

It appears to me Marmol is a placeholder through the dump part of the rebuild and when Bloom thinks we are ready to win he will bring in his guy.

It's possible Bloom thinks Marmol can win without the "game planner" who Mozeliak hired looking over his shoulder. If we see a starting pitcher getting hammered and left on the mound until he throws his designated 90 pitches then we will know it was Marmol. If we see Donovan moved from second base to left field to make room for a player named Gorman who batted .203 for the season we will know it was Marmol and not the game planner.

It's entirely possible the 2 losing seasons in the last 3 years are entirely the fault of Mozeliak's game planner. We find out in 2026. Marmol and most of his staff are former Cardinals minor league coaches responsible for developing the talent now in St Louis.

Most indications are that Bloom has respect for Marmol. So like it or not , the odds sure seem to favor some extension.

Those wanting a 'name' manager that has taken a team to WS etc. might realize there would not be many of those guys knocking at the door to manager the Cardinals right now. The POBO is rebuilding with young guys and a vet manager may want veterans in his lineup . The two could clash over the personnel. So unsure who would replace Oli certainly a vet 'name' manager may not be interested.

I've never understood the "so called" Cardinal fans, who know the team needs a better roster, but want to blame everything on the manager. Oli's job was to give the young guys experience and time to develop into contributing major league players. The front office is happy with his efforts in that area.
You can't give up on 23 and 24 year old players, just because they are struggling at the MLB level. If JJ has a poor first six weeks, half of you will be screaming to cut him from the team.
