Can someone explain how the Cardinals won the 2006 WS with a 89mil payroll while the Yankees had a 195mil payroll?

Re: 2011 MLB payroll
The bigger question is how could the Cardinals of 2026 have a lesser payroll than the 2011 version. In 15 years how much have payrolls exploded in baseball. The Cardinals in 2026 are probably the only team who has a reduced payroll from their 2011 version.

2013 MLB Team Payrolls
The following table details the final 2013 payroll for each MLB team.
Team Name Payroll
New York Yankees $229,391,839
Los Angeles Dodgers $223,126,072
Philadelphia Phillies $160,585,714
Boston Red Sox $150,655,000
Detroit Tigers $148,314,500
Los Angeles Angels $141,039,107
Can anyone explain how the Cardinals played in the WS with a 116mil payroll while the big bad baddies large mean bad large markets just outspent the heck out of them.
This supposed crazy spending by large markets have been going on forever at about the same percentages as today…..the numbers are just larger.
And the home team is now spending like it’s the late 90’s

Re: 2011 MLB payroll
Top 10 MLB Payrolls (2025 Opening Day)
New York Mets: ~$323.1 million
Los Angeles Dodgers: ~$321.3 million
New York Yankees: ~$293.5 million
Philadelphia Phillies: ~$284.2 million
Toronto Blue Jays: ~$239.6 million
Texas Rangers: ~$220.5 million
Houston Astros: ~$220.2 million
Atlanta Braves: ~$214.8 million
San Diego Padres: ~$208.9 million
Chicago Cubs: ~$196.3 million
So as you can see the % are around the same as ever. If BDW would be in the 180mil range the Cards would be just as disadvantaged as they’ve always been and ranked right about where they’ve historically been slotted for the last 30yrs.

Easily back then a guy like Holliday was the highest player on the team making 16 million pujols was making 14 million and carpenter the ace making just 14 million. These days Holliday would be making probably 35 million pujols 40Goldfan wrote: ↑20 Jan 2026 11:06 am N.Y. Yankees $201,689,030

Million and carpenter 40 million. Different times. These days 14 million might get u a 7th or 8th place hitter or a back of the rotation starter

Re: 2011 MLB payroll
The cardinals aren’t going to be paying three 40 million dollar plus players these days and the dodgers would have definitely poached at least one of them and paid them whatever they wanted to get them. Cardinals also had one of the best pitching coaches of all time and a hall of fame managerGoldfan wrote: ↑20 Jan 2026 11:37 amPercentage Team payroll increases are the same over all these timeframesOzziesfan41 wrote: ↑20 Jan 2026 11:28 amEasily back then a guy like Holliday was the highest player on the team making 16 million pujols was making 14 million and carpenter the ace making just 14 million. In today's dollars C4L that would equate to a 2026 payroll of approx. $151,000,000+.
