My problem with Mason Winn

Post by Youboughtit »

As we all know there are 5 tools in baseball. Mason Winn will never be a top 10 SS because of his skill set is backwards. How I see his tools ranked 1-5 vs the superstar SS

Winn
Defense
Arm strength
Run
Hit for average
Hit for power

Top 5 SS tools (Henderson, Witt Jr, Lindor, Cruz, Seager)
Hit for Power
Hit for average
Run
Defense
Arm strength

Furthermore although he is a decent player it only works if there are 3-4 legit power bats to compensate.

He hit 15 homruns when he had two good knees in 2024 at age 22. With healthy knees next season I don’t see why he wouldn’t be able to hit 15-20 homruns every season when healthy which is pretty good for a gold glove short stop. He does need to learn to steal bases though

The way he spells his name?

Mine is his injury concerns.
An average bat is fine and he's not a finished product there yet.

As to a SS back when invented, it was defense first. Even until we had Edgar did we get more than 15 ish home runs. Hasn’t been a homer or huge rbi position for STL historically.

I’d say for Winn you got it right

Not that I’m arguing, however, given that SS is traditionally thought of as a defense-first position, one would think your ordering of Winn’s skills would be on target.

Fascinating.

The year before Ozzie Smith came over from the Cardinals, he slashed .222.294/.256/.549 with the Padres.
In his 6th year with the Cardinals, he slashed .303/.392/.383/.775. He was an All Star for 15 years and is in the
HOF. The most home runs he ever hit in any one year was 6.

I'm not comparing Masyn with Ozzie, but I'd much rather have a GG shortstop than worrying about OPS. Let's look for
that from the corner infielders and corner outfielders. And be as strong defensively as possible up the middle.

My prob with Winn is I think he will be washed by early 30s

See the quick decline of:

Andrelton Simmons (29)
Rafael Furcal (32)
Elvis Andrus (33)
Edgar Renteria (30)

Last age season with min 2 fWAR in ()

Winn’s pure athleticism is his greatest asset and he’s already having some knee trouble.

Lock him up now at a discount through age 29/30 but that’s it.

He said at winter warmup from himself that he is not going to hit for power, that is not his skill set.

SS was not a power position in the 80s. It is now. To be a potential HOF or all star SS (superstar) it will require 25-30HR.

Today’s SS tend to play average def and be a teams best hitter

He was 18th last year offensively at SS. Not average

And you think that is a top 5-10 SS and perineal all star potential? Or just a VG player? Asking because some on this site think he is a future superstar. To me a superstar is a future HOF caliber player

Having players on the AS team and in the HOF is great BUT I'd rather have a winning team. Winn is a winner. Good defense, average or better hitter. The team will win a lot of games with him at SS. I could see the Cards moving him in a couple of year to move JJ back to SS but right now Winn is the right man for the SS position

Didn't we already have this conversation? Winn isn't on the same level offensively at this point as many of he leagues top shortstops-and they aren't on his level defensively. Extend him and worry about something else.
