Trent Burns, another coulda, woulda?

Post by California Cardinal Fan »

I think Mizzou is not going to reach any kind of high ceiling this year unless/until they start getting significant minutes from Burns, playing at a level representative of the hype he initially received. At this point that looks very unlikely this season, and maybe never. He seems to be one of those highly touted acquisitions from both Martin and now Gates, who due to injury or never being able to make the transition, just disappears. That 7'4", along with the talent he supposedly has, would be a game changer, but it's not going to happen.

Have you seen him play? I think calling him a "game changer" at this point in his development is sort of silly. Maybe he can earn some meaningful playing time in a year or two.

Sometimes it takes a player of Burns' size time to fully develop; they may not reach their potential until their junior or senior years. The way Gates talked up this guy made people believe he was ready to contribute this year. When a guy like Randall is the first center off the bench it tells you how far Burns has to go to be effective. I agree with you that Burns needs to play SOME, just for game experience, it's not like Phillips and Randall are tearing it up, so why not?

Please reread my final sentence. Notice I used the word's supposedly' and 'would.' Posting a response like yours without actually understanding what you are quoting makes the intended snark a tad ineffective.

Well, I didn't realize you were premising the comment on talent he supposedly has. I only know what I have seen, and my opinion is that there is no way he is near a level to get much playing time, much less be considered a game changer.

So, you're saying because it hasn't happened yet, that it won't.

Posting a response like yours without actually understanding he is a freshman makes the intended snark in the subject line a tad ineffective

I agree with you on that. And I know he had that foot problem that kept him out, and therefore unable to develop, all last year, but at this point, halfway through this season, I am seriously doubting that he is likely to be a meaningful, much less impactful, player for Mizzou. You have to stick with him, though, just because there is that outside chance he "could" come around next year and start showing some of the promise he's supposed to have. Just look at Mizzou's fiasco of not giving Brazile a good chance, and then he went to Arky and became a truly impactful player.

If you’re Mizzou, you don’t ever give up on him. 7’5” with the ability to shoot the ball?

Invest time in the kid, develop him, and see if you can’t turn him into a factor. He’s worth the investment.

Ahh, Winon, my old friend, you don't actually understand he's a freshman only on paper. In physical reality he is a sophomore who, though unable to suit up, has been under the tutelage Gates and his staff for a year. And do try to be a little more original.
