What was the how and why of Brian Sutter leaving the Blues?

Post by TAFKAP »

Hey, because i was just a teenager, I really don't remember the details of my first couple years as a "Blues Fan". I remember the excitement of the 1990-91 season, Hull, Oates, and Scott Stevens. I remember those playoffs because I worked in the Electronics department at Walmart so I listened to the games and had to page score updates, anytime someone scored "Code Blue 4-1". I remember listening to KMOX discussing Oates wanting more money but not him being traded. I remember signing Shanahan, I remember losing Stevens. I don't remember Sutter leaving or the exact timeline. The 92-93 season I remember a lot of that season because of the playoffs. So did Sutter leave at the end of the 91-92 season? I know that Plager was Head Coach at the start of the 92-93 season but was replaced by Bob Berry. What happened that we had 3 Head Coaches in 1992?

He never got past the second round. He got canned after they lost to chicago in first round. Plager tookover and had a nervous breakdown early and berry tookover. They upset the hawks in the playoffs (they had won the western conference and were cup favorites). Cujo stood on his head and we swept 4-0. After Hull won the series, belfour lost his mind in lockerroom.

St. Louis loved Sutter more than Sutter loved St. Louis.

Different era and different values, and I respect him 100 percent. Truly, had he been drafted one position in either direction, would be a ghost.

I knew Plager didn't last long, I just didn't know why, and wasn't sure if Sutter started the season or was let go before. I'll never forget the 1993 playoffs, everything you said plus the "Only God saves more than Joseph" banners and fact the Blues made the playoffs on the last day of the season. I still have all the sports pages from that series. Game 3 was the reason I knew the girl I was dating at the time was a keeper even though she was a Senior in High School and I had just graduated 2 years before (She'll be my wife of 30 years this September). I was a fan the 2 seasons before, after the 1993 playoffs I was a FAN.

If ya' want details, Pierre McGuire knows Blues history better than most folks. No offense intended to most folks.
