Dvorsky Carbonneau our 1st and Buch for McDavid. Provided there’s a conversation about a long term contract. First moving Binner and Faulk to clear cap for prospects and/or picks.
That wouldn't be enough.
If I'm Edmonton My reply would be something like "Alex (Steen), Army never wasted our time by offering us outlandish deals...please tell us this won't be the norm moving forward."

Then you’re saying there’s no possible deal from McDavid from any team. That’s more than Vancouver just got for Hughes on a rental. What more could you give?
I'm not sure either the Oilers or Blues would do this, though I feel your idea has some merit. The Blues understand where they are and are likely not interested in paying what he will earn in a few years anyway. The Oilers should have looked into trading Draisaitl in my opinion before signing him long term. Like Toronto, the Oilers now have too much money at one position, and are trapped a bit. That's how we wound up with Broberg and Holloway. Finally I doubt McDavid would want to come here while we are not a good team and frankly not good enough to win even with McSavior on our team. In five years, when our young players are established and we seem to be a player away from contending. Then we go after a rental to put us over the top.

Why
Why would he come to stl in the first place?
This is really the only hole in it so provided he would sign long term here.
He wouldn’t. He wants to win more than life itself
Is he going to take less money to go someplace to win a Cup? I doubt it. That’s what he would have to do.

People falling into the same trap that doomed the baseball cardinals. Falling in love with our own prospects, the Fabrege Eggs so to speak (I know I probably didn’t spell that right)
No i dont think Faberge Eggs is the issue here. At this moment in time the Blues needs the core of talented young, cost effective players to form the meat of the roster and be productive. They need this more than they need McDavid today.
The Blues team will start lurching ahead again when Snuggerud, Dvorsky, Stenberg, Neighbours and Holloway start showing up every night on the boxscore. What we have learned this year is that Thomas, Buch, Kyrou and certainly Schenn are not capable of carrying the team offensively they need a rock solid depth that can produce behind them. Right now that depth is mostly 20-21 year old kids.

McDavid is not a rental. He signed a contract through 2028 at about 7-10 million less than he would have got somewhere else. That alone makes the deal more expensive.

It would have to be a long term commitment. The point is some here even if you could deal for the worlds best wouldn’t trade their prospects.

That’s what you would prefer to do? Lurch ahead? You are automatically a top ten team in the League with this deal.

You are not wrong with that. I'm not sure that is enough to get him anyway but it is a good place to start. Additionally it's the worlds best played on a cheap cost controlled contract through 2028. I still can't believe he signed for 12.5 million. Maybe for one year to just to put the oilers on notice but the length is what amazed me.

He doesn't sign for less than 20M per with any other team but Edmonton or the actual team he wants to be traded to.
I do see a world where Edmonton flounders over the next calendar year and McDavid asks for a trade. His contract did the opposite of what an extension usually does. It made him more tradeable. That contract is absolute gold to anyone who is on the cusp of winning. But what is going to go the other way is a rival level talent. McDavid isn't being trade for multiple NHL level players. That would gut the team he is going to and is trying to win it. He would go to a team that has another superstar level player, but McJesus being McJesus is that much better than so they do the sideways trade that allows security for Edmonton and a shot for the new team.
We talked the other day about Robo. That style of player would be what would be happening. Somewhat similar to what happened with florida and Calgary. But, the value of the trade this year is at an all time high because you get 3 years of this contract. Next year a little less for the 2 years. And then the last year obviously would be the rental. But the Oilers are an enigma. They sit comfortably in the top 5 in the west, as all the teams after that are just whatever at the moment. But their goal differential is +2. This is scary. Any game any team could punk the OIlers because of that defense/Goalie situation.
I don't know how after all these years they haven't properly addressed that, and they seem to be making worse and worse decisions every time they try. The Blues are not a spot for McDavid. And this deal really doesn't make sense for either team unless it was the offseason and you drugged up the Oilers.

As the first priority, we need to build a team of young players that a "McDavid" would even consider wanting to play with.
See Buffalo, Anaheim, Minnesota, and Detroit for examples.
They have to have cap space to handle the contract. They’re already paying their guys. My deal hasn’t given up a lot of your current core. There’s no guarantee that your prospects are good enough to get you there. You’ve said it several times. Most of our young guys are middle 6 guys. This would be a chance to get a driver of the team, which is what’s needed. Edmonton is not paradise for Gods sake.

Why
I may be biased being from Calgary but... I've watched him play for a long time (get all the Toiler games here) and what I've noticed from McJesus is that he does not elevate the other players on the team. For all the years he has played, only one player has had much success with him, Draisatl. To be honest other than the fact he has some other worldly skill, would you really want to play on the same team where you are not allowed/permitted to contribute other than being a 'don't be outscored upon' when on the ice... You will never be on the ice for a powerplay or in the last 2 minutes of the game if you're behind...
The benefit to having him would be an increase in jersey sales and people attending the games.
