Jason Robertson the next Rantanen?
Apparently Robo is headed down a similar path that Rantanen did with the Avs last year. Their contract talks are rumored to not have gone well and Robo wants 12m. He's definitely worth it as he is a PPG guy and has put up 40 2 times before. The stars knew they were going to be facing this kind of jam once they made the Rantanen deal so I'm sure they have some kind of plan for it. But I guess they were hoping they could get him for somewhere between 10-11.5. This would put him at tied for 5th in pay.
Who are the players that could go for him?
Toronto could look to redo their roster after their star power hasn't kept it going once Marner left
Ottawa could look to reshuffle the deck and tease that trade with Tkachuk that we all have speculated could happen. That would allow Dallas to escape their cap woes for a couple more seasons.
Heck the Blues could get themselves fleeced here and send Kyrou/Carbo/Faulk/1st/2nd. Tho - I dont think they could take on both Faulk and Kyrous contract so something would have to be retained next year.
What's some speculative trades you guys see?

He has only one more RFA year left. Ottawa (or anyone) would be foolish to make that sort of move knowing he could just take a 1 year deal and walk. If someone is trading for him they either are in total win-now mode or can get an extension done. It’s a Matthew Tkachuk situation basically (if he really expects to leave that is).

Re: Jason Robertson the next Rantanen?
I think that's the situation that's causing problems tho. He was on the trade block over the summer. He apparently still is. It's just like Rantanen. Voiced what they were looking for and the brass apparently can't get that number done. If what was true in Avalanche country (they smell their own farts so I don't believe it) they were only .5m a year off and Rantanen said no. The risk was brought on by the Hurricanes but they were able to send out their own disgruntled guy in Necas.bluetunehead wrote: ↑09 Jan 2026 15:09 pm He has only one more RFA year left. It's partially why I bring up the Blues. Kyrou is no where near the reliable player Robo is but he puts up similar numbers. Blues would have to sweeten the pot but the Stars would be happy to take on an 8 million dollar contract. Seems very similar. Blues would probably end up getting fleeced in the deal and then they would have to figure out how to sign Hollywood Broberg and Robo at the same time.
Re: Jason Robertson the next Rantanen?
Coulda sworn he was semi trashed as a pretender on this board just a short 6 months ago?
I wish it was the Blues with this "problem".

Re: Jason Robertson the next Rantanen?
If you could move Kyrou in a deal to Dallas, make a 2nd deal to move Buchnevich there is your money and you are changing up the core, at that point you put Thomas and Robertson together.
Re: Jason Robertson the next Rantanen?
That would be a hell of a roster turn around. Sales pitch- Kyrou is signed for a long time!

You aren't trading two players with full NTC in a single trade deadline. That simply isn't going to happen. Also the Blues have shown no inclination they even dislike Buch, so.....

I view Robertson as a better version of Kyrou. Same types of deficiencies. There’s a reason a team looks to move him. There’s a reason why team USA did not add him.
It’s a pass for me. With some of the proposed trades that involve Kyrou, perhaps that works. But I’m not comfortable giving a deficient player 11 million, so the dollars matter there.

Re: Jason Robertson the next Rantanen?
Kyrou isn't 25% the player that Robertson is. Robo's bad years (DeBoer's 2nd and 3rd seasons in Dallas) were still 30 goals and 80 points. When he isn't being stifled by DeBoer, he's a 40 goal, 90 point player. He obliterates Kyrou in every single statistic. He's once again on pace for nearly 100 points this season while Kyrou sits tied in 257th place with 17 points.

The list goes on forever. Robo has more hits, more blocks, more takeaways, he's younger, he's bigger. The only stat I can find that Kyrou leads him in is faceoff wins (2). There is nobody on the Blues that Dallas would want in exchange for Robertson.

I know we're talking about assets and making room but Robertson has to want to sign an extension here for any trade to be plausible. Unlikely we're high on his list right now.

Re: Jason Robertson the next Rantanen?
I guess the real question is would you take Robo for $12 or $12.5 for 8 years vs. JK for $8.125 for another 5 (I think)? That's a really good question. I think I would.TheJackBurton wrote: ↑12 Jan 2026 13:53 pmMoney is a hell of a convincerbluetunehead wrote: ↑10 Jan 2026 20:03 pm I know we're talking about assets and making room but Robertson has to want to sign an extension here for any trade to be plausible. I would with no hesitation. And I like Kyrou.MiamiLaw wrote: ↑12 Jan 2026 14:21 pmI guess the real question is would you take Robo for $12 or $12.5 for 8 years vs. JK for $8.125 for another 5 (I think)? Re: Jason Robertson the next Rantanen?
It would likely have to be for 12.5 because of taxes, but quite frankly yes. If you are getting the same type of player Robertson has a 100 point season already under his belt and hasn't shown any real signs of major slowdown. I'm not sure if he reaches 100 points again but 80+ seems to be a pretty safe bet.MiamiLaw wrote: ↑12 Jan 2026 14:21 pmI guess the real question is would you take Robo for $12 or $12.5 for 8 years vs. JK for $8.125 for another 5 (I think)? I'm just not sure at this point if Kyrou gets any better, here anyway. I know this seasons points total is very likely the aberration, but his ceiling is likely 75-80 on this team which is nothing to laugh at, but if you can get a guy who has eclipsed 100 I think you do it.
Re: Jason Robertson the next Rantanen?
Why would the Blues get him?
Why would anyone want Kyrou?
What did I miss. Seems ridiculous far fetched.
BTW--Rantanen is a better bigger player than Robertson.
