Music City Bowl
Did I read a headline correctly that Altmeyer is going to play? At least it'll be watchable. Hopefully TN doesn't have a good D line and make Luke run for his life all game.
Re: Music City Bowl
Yeah, he's playing. The notable opt outs are Gabe Jacas and JC Davis. Hate that Davis is sitting out, not sure who will be at LT. Might need to keep a TE in more to help block. Tenn has a good offense on paper, I'm hoping the D is ready to play.
Re: Music City Bowl
Man I'm going to miss Altmeyer. He's the best QB we've had since Kurt Kittner.
Very entertaining game, and the Illini crowd sure showed out. Lunney definitely got better as the year went on, some of those play calls on key 3rd downs were brilliant. If that reverse throw back from Beatty to Altmeyer had worked it would've been epic.
I can't believe the kicker is going into the portal...do kickers even get NIL money?????

Re: Music City Bowl
Did you see some of the terrible kicking in the college playoffs? Olano has a couple of the highest paying schools recruiting him, Texas A&M and Ohio State. He's gonna get paid. The part that pisses me off is apparently they've been talking to him/family for awhile now.Rickster wrote: ↑02 Jan 2026 10:15 am Man I'm going to miss Altmeyer. Re: Music City Bowl
I mean, yeah...good kickers are not a dime a dozen even for power 4 teams. I get that. But man....I read he turned down double what he made in collective NIL this year, which was $750K. so he now gets more than $1.5 mil from Texas A&M. for 23 FG attempts / year. If you assume he's getting $2 mil now, at 23 figgies that's just under $87,000 per attempt.ChiefSTL wrote: ↑05 Jan 2026 08:06 amDid you see some of the terrible kicking in the college playoffs? if you have enough NIL money and budget to pay a kicker $87,000 each for a handful of figgies, that's a signal the system is a little out of whack.
Re: Music City Bowl
Oh the system is broke for sure. Eventually I would think the teams that can't spend like the upper echelon are going to have donor's saying, what's the point in giving all this money if we still can't compete? Some type of cap system has to happen. I know there will still be shady things going on, but there's gotta be something to help level the playing field.Rickster wrote: ↑05 Jan 2026 09:42 amI mean, yeah...good kickers are not a dime a dozen even for power 4 teams. Re: Music City Bowl
if you're an alumn and you write a check to your alma mater fully understanding/documented that it will go to an NIL fund the school will use to pay athletes, do you get to deduct that as a donation from either indiv or business taxes?ChiefSTL wrote: ↑06 Jan 2026 08:01 amOh the system is broke for sure. Re: Music City Bowl
Just when you think it can't get any crazier, enter Lane Kiffin to turn it up a notch. Demond Williams, QB for Washington, just signed a deal to stay with them last week. Apparently LSU is offering him a crazy amount of money, so now he's entered the transfer portal with the intent on signing with LSU. Washington is threatening to sue because of the signed contract. This is just nuts.

Re: Music City Bowl
Schools have a separate payment portal for NIL money, but it is still considered a gift/donation to the University (or their Foundation) which is a 501c3 so it is tax deducible. Interesting thing is, an Athletic Director, or Associate, anyone involved is not supposed to be the go between, meaning they should not facilitate the donation. Example - Donor approaches the Athletic Director with a desire to donate $500,000 to the NIL, the AD will give him the NIL link/donor site, and that is it. IF the donor wants to meet with the athlete, they can, but a representative from the University is not allowed to be there. Now...I am SURE that never happens. ha ha ha ha haif you're an alumn and you write a check to your alma mater fully understanding/documented that it will go to an NIL fund the school will use to pay athletes, do you get to deduct that as a donation from either indiv or business taxes?
Anyways, I used to work at a D1 University and also slept in a Holiday Inn Express last night.
Re: Music City Bowl
so it seems to me, one quick, easy step towards a correction/balance is to remove any NIL contributions from deductible contributions. Public schools are a unit of government anyway, and don't technically have (c)3 status. So why do they often qualify to receive tax-deductible contributions at all?FrankTheTank wrote: ↑09 Jan 2026 09:47 amSchools have a separate payment portal for NIL money, but it is still considered a gift/donation to the University (or their Foundation) which is a 501c3 so it is tax deducible. To be fair, I'm not opposed to college athletes getting to share in the profits of their labor. It just seems out of whack and in need of a correction. If rich people want to spend money on better players to produce more wins for the university sports teams, fine. It's their money, but that should be treated as an investment, like a movie producer kicking in $$ to produce a movie. It should not be considered a charitable donation.
