Texas Tech QB NIL deal higher than 1st Rd NFL Rookies
Brendan Sorsby $6M/yr deal is higher than McCarthy, Nix, Penix, and Darts first round NFL Salaries. The incentive to go pro will eventually be a pay cut.
This is getting crazier by the day.

The case for a cap is overwhelming now.

Smart play on his part.
Great money and he can pad his stats in the B12.

True but only for a top few. Most will be happy with a Free Plane Ticket and Free meal plan from Shake Shack

That's a bit misleading. Nix and Dart both signed contracts worth around $4-4.5 million per year over 4 years. So, Sorsby may get more in year 1, but both Nix and Dart received signing bonuses of about $10 million and $8.5 million (estimated), respectively.rezero wrote: ↑06 Jan 2026 17:10 pm Brendan Sorsby $6M/yr deal is higher than McCarthy, Nix, Penix, and Darts first round NFL Salaries. We don’t know that. Heck, why don’t these universities have to publish a report that shows what their NIL deals are. At the end of the portal period, each university should have to disclose their deals for each individual and the total amount spent for their portal commitments.Caregiver1 wrote: ↑06 Jan 2026 17:17 pm True but only for a top few. No one knows where the limits to this are but something has to come to a head. Kids refuse to leave school because they can make more in school than they can at their “profession”.
They fight for extra years of eligibility to make a ridiculous amount of money, some staying 5, 6 even 7 years. The universities are exploring multiple ways to bring more money to the athletic department, even exploring the sale of the department or at least parts of it to private equity firms to raise cash. Some billionaire donors are dropping huge amounts of cash into departments to aid in the recruitment of players into a program.
Mizzou has been able to make some inroads into keeping up with the Jones but they won’t be able to keep up forever.

Maybe a dumb question, but where is Texas Tech getting all of its money from? They had the most expensive team in college football this past season as well.

Texas oil billionaire Cody Campbell.
Reportedly has raised/donated over 60 million to NIL.

Cody Campbell. Unlimited funds to buy the best team in football. The fun is just getting started. Can Mizzou start giving out honorary degrees to people like Musk?cardinalsfever44 wrote: ↑06 Jan 2026 19:15 pm Maybe a dumb question, but where is Texas Tech getting all of its money from? in an interview with Pawwlll Eli said there was that 20MM hard cap each U had to spend but obviously that is absolutely not true. The Big Brands or any school with Billionaire backers are doing it just like in the olden days, paying WHATEVER they please. Eli needs to do a better sales job with the Fortune 500's companies in MO. There is a MU alum Billionaire in Josh Kroenke, hopefully he will step up along with many others to make Tigers competitive finally.

Competition for Leavitt is becoming insane and will surpass what TT paid. Ole Quittin wants him bad along with several other Big Brands so watch out.
Those calling for Hard cap is hilarious. Who is going to enforce it? NCAA? LOL they have been proven totally impotent. BTW they supposedly HAVE a hard cap now. $20MM.

It's time to start treating this for what it is: professional sports. I'd tier the system with 48 programs(4 12-team divisions) competing in Tier 1 and playing for the National Championship. The other schools would then be pushed back into probably what is a more traditional college football conference system. Set up rules for what teams can spend, players are signing multi-year contracts, etc.
Re: Texas Tech QB NIL deal higher than 1st Rd NFL Rookies
There are two different sources of revenue for the student-athlete. The $20MM cap is for money paid directly to student-athletes by athletic departments . The $20MM cap is the sum for all the athletes in all the sports.hdhntr148 wrote: ↑07 Jan 2026 08:03 am Competition for Leavitt is becoming insane and will surpass what TT paid. There is no cap for Name-Image-Likeness. NIL money comes from outside the University. The student-athlete is supposed to do something for the NIL money like promotional appearance etc...

Re: Texas Tech QB NIL deal higher than 1st Rd NFL Rookies
You (and a lot of others) are talking about 2 different things. There is a hard cap of $20.5M that the schools can spend. That is different than what other people can also donate to a schools NIL fund above and beyond the $20.5M. The NCAA said that any individual donation will be scrutinized to prevent someone from buying a championship, but that corporate funds will not be monitored. This basically means any company can buy a championship (or any individual who owns a company). Texas had a $50M roster last year so they were given at least $30M in NIL donations. This is specifically why Eli called out the large companies in Missouri as they are the bottomless donators per the rules.hdhntr148 wrote: ↑07 Jan 2026 07:59 am in an interview with Pawwlll Eli said there was that 20MM hard cap each U had to spend but obviously that is absolutely not true.
