OT-ND @ Cal
Wild ending to the game last night. It looked like Notre Dame was going to go 2-0 on their west coast trip to Stanford & Cal. We had played ND close (-5) at their place. ND had won at Stanford (12-3) on Tues. Cal lead by a small margin most of the way, but ND had gone ahead late in the game when Cal when on a 5-minute drought. ND was up 6. Cal kept fouling, ND hit most of the FT's, but Cal hit some 3's. ND was still up 3 with seconds left. The ND coach wanted to foul. A ND player fouled the Cal dribbler a couple of times but didn't get a call. He made one last attempt before the Cal player went into his shooting motion. The 3-point shot went in & called an And-One although it looked as if the foul came before the shot. The Cal players were elated, but the call was overturned to a foul on the floor. Then it was overturned again to the original call. Cal made the FT for the lead & ND missed a last second shot & lost by one. The ND coach was furious & raced after the officials but was held back by assistant coaches.

The officials certainly helped ND in our game up there.

Saw explanation of the call at halftime of a game today. New rule: if a player has his shoulders set towards the basket his shooting motion doesn't have to have been started in order for a foul to be a shooting foul. Not sure this was the case in this instance.
Similar to the end of Auburn/UGA as mentioned in another thread except the team that made the miracle comeback won the Cal game.

Hummpf. So it's a "he-was-thinking-about-shooting" foul? Or a "maybe-I'll-shoot-and-maybe-I-won't" foul? Just a bit of referee mind reading, I guess.MizzouMarv wrote: ↑03 Jan 2026 19:19 pm Saw explanation of the call at halftime of a game today. Wait! That's what they're doing, isn't it?

Awww. I feel really bad for that team. Maybe the HC should go watch the tape of the Mizzou game. I’m sure he didn’t benefit from any home cooking. Right?
