Shots…Shots…Shots…

Post by BobbyBlue »

I personally think the Blues need to shoot…from any angle…from any position…from any player. One difference I see is that they just don’t shoot…looking for the perfect pass all the time and giving up shots. Put the puck on net…towards the net…play for rebounds…and deflections…get dirty goals…get the defense involved more. You can’t play this game with only (13) shots a game…no way…no how. And last year…they generated shots…this year…for whatever reason…they are not. You can’t score…unless you shoot the puck!

Yes and No for me.

They need to adopt a strategy that goes away from setting up grade A opportunities and they need some players with a pass first mentality to be more balanced. Shooting from any angle and any position is not quite going to work either, it's the other extreme. Colorado's strategy was analyzed in another area, and playing like them would help us quite a bit, but right now what we need is effort from players that aren't giving it. The players are very reactive and stationary on the powerplay, having to abide by a rigid structure that at the first sign of pressure starts to break down. Last year they actually did not generated a ton of shots, they were just more middle of the pack. The difference between the teams was player movement, especially when we'd go on those runs of goals against teams, we'd be swarming closer to the net and the screens would get us where we needed to be.

The blues have a pretty active defense core all things considered, most of our chances are because they activate when we don't score on transition. That has led to some breakdowns going the other way which has required big saves. Those got saved a bit above expected last year down the stretch, this year not remotely close to that mark.

If the blues start to move their feet at any point and having moving players in front of the net and shoot at the net and hit it, then rebounds will happen and shots will happen. The teams in the league doing that right now are winning more games than they are losing. Not all as successful as Colorado, but all still in the playoff positions. Adapt or Die in this league.

The system they want to play only works if you have guys that you are confident wont give the puck up when they get pressured.

Someone said in another post that our skill guys have no heart and our heart guys have no skill. That is a very true statement

Dvorsky, Berggren and Stenberg showed what can happen vs Avs. Dvorsky threw the puck toward the net. Berggren was in front of Wedgewood and screened him on the goalie's left, and Stenberg was to the right of the goalie and ready for a rebound. It worked well to shoot and flood the net that time. Had it been most of our other forwards in Dvorsky's spot, he would have lost the puck and there would have at least been a 3 on 1 versus Binner.

My point is not to shoot from that far from the goal (he was almost on the blue line), but our player to skate toward the center of the ice, get the shot off (not try a perfect shot like Thomas, Kyrou tries) but to get it low toward the goalie and have your wingers rush the net to screen or be ready for a rebound. Snuggerrud has a low, straight shot and I think it was he and another forward who rushed in. Then Fabbri and another both headed around the net and almost batted the puck in (poor memory of who but I think you have the idea.).

last; What has happened to Parayko rarely skating through the defenders and circling around the back of the opponents net and another of our forwards crashing the net to either get a pass from Parayko to flip. or jam in. In fact other than Faulk (Fowler was great at it last season but he is probably the biggest minus this season for whatever reason-not the contract), Faulk goes wherever he needs to go. That depends upon a forward covering for his spot. A Mobile defense is sorely needed again

Effort, scheme, etc…The Blues looked like a junior team playing against men. They weren’t prepared for how the Avs attacked them.

All I know is this team wants me to take shots. A lot of 'em.
