Nolan Arenado trade to the Angels would realistically look like
What STL Gets
One low‑tier prospect---OF Randy De Jesus (Angels No. 27 prospect)
What STL Pays
$25–30M salary coverage
Why
Only one suitor + Arenado’s no‑trade clause + declining performance
A salary dump disguised as a trade.

I wouldn't expect it to be quite that dire.

Like with Contreras at 1st base, Bloom opens another spot for a younger player at 3rd too.

I think if we got a deal like that it would be about as good as we could realistically hope for.

Re: Nolan Arenado trade to the Angels would realistically look like
Yea that’s probably best case scenario. It could also be a bad contract for bad contract like arenado for castellanos or even like that bogus rumor of arenado for soler
Re: Nolan Arenado trade to the Angels would realistically look like
From a business standpoint, that does not make much sense to me. Cards owe $37 million over the next two years. Why would we pay the Angels $25-30 million for a low upside minor leaguer that most likely gets DFA/released in a couple of years. If that's the best you can do - keep him. He's still the best defensive 3rd baseman in the organization. Offensively he is below average at this point in his career but still viable when healthy. If that's the best offer roll the dice on some sort of comeback and try and flip him at the deadline. Request that he split time 3B/1B/DH so that the team has an opportunity to see what the others have. Right now, it has not been any better than what Arenado still brings to the table stat wise offensively and a major minus defensively. Is he a cancer in the clubhouse? I have no idea, but I haven't read or heard that's the case.
I get the push to move him because of declining production but too much money with little to no return just to say "well we got rid of Arenado, finally." JMO

It makes sense to trade him because arenado wants to go at this point and when he’s pouty it’s bad ask the Rockies and because unfortunately they want to see Gorman suck everyday at third next seasonPWD8730 wrote: ↑01 Jan 2026 12:37 pm From a business standpoint, that does not make much sense to me. Why would the Angels want him? For what purpose does he help their franchise?
Re: Nolan Arenado trade to the Angels would realistically look like
Different time, different circumstances. One thing to have a superstar (time with Rockies) pouting versus an aging veteran (time with Cardinals) pouting. He doesn't carry the same weight so nobody really cares if he pouts. If he wants out that badly he can request a release from his contract. If he refuses to play, Cardinals suspend him without pay.

I think they’d get a better return if they’re eating that much money. I think it’s more likely they’d only be willing to eat $15 million for that low of a prospect.
Re: Nolan Arenado trade to the Angels would realistically look like
That and it has more to do
with the player being dire than the team

The ridiculous link to a Twitter story involving Arenado in a restaurant restroom was humorous. But what if there was an Arenado for Soler deal? It could be intriguing.

They won’t get a good prospect for him no matter how much they eat on that contract. At this point he’s just an overpriced defensive specialist and it’s not like they will be wanting to get him for leadership qualities because he’s definitely not a leader eithercardinalsfan27 wrote: ↑01 Jan 2026 12:58 pm I think they’d get a better return if they’re eating that much money. Re: Nolan Arenado trade to the Angels would realistically look like
Considering we are getting revenue sharing saving $17 million is probably beneficial. I just now realized he is owed another $15 million in 2027.
Get what you can get and move on.

How about one current prospect and a draft choice?
