“He continues on his path that he’s trending on, yeah, he’s going to get the opportunity because his stick is in the right position, he stops in the right spots, he doesn’t get below pucks,” Montgomery said of Stenberg. “He’s someone that’s developing that skill and that the coaches are seeing.”
“I think it's been when I got a bit older and started talking about those details with sticks and everything,” Stenberg said. “I would say the year after I got drafted, I talked a lot to ‘Steener’ in Sweden when he was the development guy there. He talked a lot about sticks and stuff. Maybe a little bit from there, I just think about it more. I would say like before that, I don’t think I ever think about how I should position my stick. Yeah, maybe start thinking about it more and more there and just try to read what the guy with the puck is going to do and then you can put your stick on your reads.”

One or the other doesn't cut it, have to work [practice and play] hard and smart. And have talent.Old_Goat wrote: ↑31 Dec 2025 08:23 amHigh IQ is a skill. -- Old GoatJohn Cocktoastin wrote: ↑30 Dec 2025 21:43 pm “He continues on his path that he’s trending on, yeah, he’s going to get the opportunity because his stick is in the right position, he stops in the right spots, he doesn’t get below pucks,” Montgomery said of Stenberg. “He’s someone that’s developing that skill and that the coaches are seeing.”

I agree. Takes high levels of all three 100% of the time to be an NHLer. And there is a fine line between being an All-World player and being Elite...with the elite being a bit more gifted by God.DawgDad wrote: ↑31 Dec 2025 10:13 amOne or the other doesn't cut it, have to work [practice and play] hard and smart. You can be an NHL player without putting in the hard work on the ice or have high IQ. We see it most days with Kyrou. The sad thing is if players like him married their amazing skill to those other traits, they'd have a shot at being a top 10 player at their position.Old_Goat wrote: ↑31 Dec 2025 10:30 amI agree. What really irritates me is when prospects like Carbonneau acknowledge that they need to focus on those elements of their game and people on here think that's a bad thing. When people say this team lacks elite talent, I agree in that we don't have many players who marry all three (skill, IQ and hard work) in one player. You look at the 2019 team and you see a lot of that up and down the lineup. Guys who could put it in the net, forecheck, backcheck, battle for pucks, etc. There weren't a lot of soft one dimensional players on that team and that's what it takes to win a Cup.
