Hitting on late picks
First off i want to start by saying i understand that hitting on some late picks is mostly a crapshoot. My question is this… what is the blues philosophy on 3rd round picks and later?
There are other organizations that have 4th, 5th and 6th round picks who turn into productive staples in the line up.
Just one example off the top of my head is hagel. He was a 6th tound pick i believe and put up 90 pts last year, 75 the year before and is a ppg this season.
I will include more examples soon but do we not swing for the fences ever? Do we only draft to potentially make the nhl? Or do we just not have the players that elevate 6th rounders?
Any info is appreciated.

Doesn’t answer your question, but I work with a guy who played with Hagel. He said Hagel wasn’t much to play against at all, and that he still can’t believe he’s turned into the player/motor that he has. He’s a pretty unique case…especially for a North American player.

I believe their philosophy is BPA regardless of position - at least early on. I would think that maintains throughout, given needs change and those players especially need more time to develop. That's what Army has said before for 1st rounders. They've done very well in that 20-ish range.
Great picks 3rd round or later: Parayko, Binnington and Gilmour (7th rounder).
They also emphasize the middle...
“One thing that really hasn’t changed is how you build a team, and that’s through the middle of the ice — centermen, defense, goalie,” he said. “Wingers are extremely important but they seem to become more available than centermen or D… you don’t want to take a half or full letter grade-lesser player just because of a positional need because the positional need changes, especially with 19 (year-old players). You’re looking at three or four years before this year’s draft players are going to make a difference.”

And just a shout out to the guy I work with who played with Hagel. He was out camping with his hockey boys sitting around a fire…and one of the guys threw paint thinner on the fire. It blew up and he almost died. Burns all over his body…hands were so messed up. Burnt his lungs and changed his voice. Ended his hockey career.theograce wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 11:40 am Doesn’t answer your question, but I work with a guy who played with Hagel. And he’s the nicest guy. Not bitter. Just a great human who loves hockey

Re: Hitting on late picks
Thanks for taking the time. Hopefully we can get a hit or 2 soon. Hagel has more points last season than anyone on our team has ever put up. Its kind of annoyingJohn Cocktoastin wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 11:41 am I believe their philosophy is BPA regardless of position - at least early on. You have to be a extremely strong person to not let that scenario define the rest of your life. Tip my hat for the man.theograce wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 12:00 pmAnd just a shout out to the guy I work with who played with Hagel. He showed me pictures of hands right after…the skin grafting etc. made my toes tingle. He’s a huge wings fan and just such a hockey guy in his heart. Can’t believe how kind and genuine he is.Younghopp1991 wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 12:07 pmYou have to be a extremely strong person to not let that scenario define the rest of your life. But he just shakes his head when talking about Hagel. He played against Jeannot as well and says he was a man at 16.

Re: Hitting on late picks
Some people just figure out their niche at different times. Its crazy to me how many blues lack a motor. The way our core carries themselves is like we are just here for the ride. A good motor on a guy that can actually finnish is a game changer. Wish some blues would take some notestheograce wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 12:14 pmHe showed me pictures of hands right after…the skin grafting etc. made my toes tingle. Although i appreciate what parry does and his role to the team he is not the type of player im talking about. And i dont consider him a actual reach as far as draft pedigree. A 6ft 6 defender who can skate and has a bomb isnt exactly stepping out on the ledge in the 3rd round.skilles wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 12:26 pmParayko 3rd round pickYounghopp1991 wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 11:51 am Hagel lightning 6th rd 8th pick drafted by buffalo

you note other 3rd rounders as 'hits'. why not parayko? he's extremely good value for where he was draftedYounghopp1991 wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 12:32 pmAlthough i appreciate what parry does and his role to the team he is not the type of player im talking about. Re: Hitting on late picks
He is definitely great value and he is a hit forsure. Ive been on paraykos side on being a top shutdown defenseman. I put the other 3rd rounders up because they are putting up 30 goals already and putting teams on their back while other STARS are injured. Geekie showed up while pasta was out. Protas had a big season last year and would be a top producer this year. Braydon point counts because the man has scored 30,40 and 50+ goals and absolutely takes over games.moose-and-squirrel wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 12:40 pmyou note other 3rd rounders as 'hits'. why not parayko? he's extremely good value for where he was draftedYounghopp1991 wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 12:32 pmAlthough i appreciate what parry does and his role to the team he is not the type of player im talking about. Jake guentzel 3rd rd 16th pick. 30+goals already 5 times. 3 of those 40+goals.
