I'm looking forward to better, quicker player evaluation (what does that mean?)
2023 spring training: Waino isn't ready to go, but Woodford will fill in. Shellacked.
2024 spring training: Gray isn't ready to go, but Thompson will fill in. Shellacked.
2024 spring training: Scott will fill in at CF. Overmatched in a huge way.
There are others...
If the 2026 spring training were to start today, the team would have a number of questions. Examples: 1) can Herrera catch? 2) can Gorman hang at 3B? 3) Can JJ hit at the MLB level? 4) Any red flags with Dobbins/Fitts/May?
Unlike us Cardinal fans, who only have the games we watch to go by, I hope the improved coaching can assess and evaluate quickly. For instance, we shouldn't have to watch Herrera catch for 85 games to realize he shouldn't catch. People are worried about Gorman playing 3B...I'm hoping our coaches have a better understanding of these players and can evaluate and make adjustments.
I'm hoping for no more April 'oh (firetruck)!' surprises.

We saw a lot this the last few years and for some reason Mo was slow to react. I'm more worried about Gorman, especially a lingering back issue. I am hoping Walker and Herrera can show improvement.ecleme22 wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 11:08 am 2023 spring training: Waino isn't ready to go, but Woodford will fill in. Shellacked.

I am very optimistic that the accuracy and rapidity of player evaluation will be much improved.

That’s nice, but what if the results of the evaluation are that these young guys can’t do it?Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 11:20 am I am very optimistic that the accuracy and rapidity of player evaluation will be much improved.
Oli certainly isn’t the right one to develop them after they’ve reached a major league given his track record with Gorman and Walker
Re: I'm looking forward to better, quicker player evaluation (what does that mean?)
You mean bringing up middling prospects, giving them starting spots for 4-5yrs, and then determining that they’re not really very good will be a thing of the past???

Then those are the results, right? It's better to know, and know sooner, than not to know. You can move on.Carp4Cy wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 11:56 amThat’s nice, but what if the results of the evaluation are that these young guys can’t do it?Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 11:20 am I am very optimistic that the accuracy and rapidity of player evaluation will be much improved.

+2. MO was promoted via the Peter Principle. To the level of his incompetence. He was, IMO, a good GM and a horrible POBO.

There's likely enough evidence on several on our roster. Any more games is just seeking redundant confirmation., which is the antithesis of quicker.Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 12:05 pmThen those are the results, right? Of course I have no way of knowing, but maybe they have things they would like to try with them that they didn't feel free to try before they were in charge?Carp4Cy wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 13:18 pmThere's likely enough evidence on several on our roster. Where do the higher upside now replacements come from IYO?Carp4Cy wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 13:18 pmThere's likely enough evidence on several on our roster. I don't see much immediately behind these guys.
There's a few in FA
There are a couple teams in the Cards situation of acquiring prospects,
and
Trades that haven't been approached yet that still could
Donovan+, catching or pitching prospects, something unexpected,

It shouldn’t be the major league manager’s job to develop players. They need to be ready for him to use and his job is to put them in position to succeed.Carp4Cy wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 11:56 amThat’s nice, but what if the results of the evaluation are that these young guys can’t do it?Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 11:20 am I am very optimistic that the accuracy and rapidity of player evaluation will be much improved.

Re: I'm looking forward to better, quicker player evaluation (what does that mean?)
Not entirely true. You want a player to be major league ready sure but there’s also development of young player even in the majors. Expecting them to be in their prime the second they hit the majors that managers and coaching staff shouldn’t have to coach is irresponsible. Especially when the level of play drastically changes, obviously, from the minors to the majorsAn Old Friend wrote: ↑28 Dec 2025 14:26 pmIt shouldn’t be the major league manager’s job to develop players.
