GDT: Gator Bowl - #19 UVA vs #25 Mizzou

Post by rezero »

There is a lot at stake for the 81st Gator Bowl. A win by Missouri would be the first time in team history it finished with 9 or more wins, Hardy needs 100yds to jump into the lead for the nations top rusher, Zoellers gets extra first team and game day reps to build some momentum for 2026, and we get to see a glimpse of of the new OC.

Interesting how closely these teams look on paper:

Avg Pts per Game:
Missouri 32.2
Virginia 32.2

Avg Pts allowed per Game
Missouri 19.4
Virginia 20.4

Avg Yds per Game
Missouri 329.3
Virginia 326.3

Also, both teams have their conference leading rusher yet both are ranked in the top 40 in the country in run defense!

The Gator Bowl has had it fair share of interesting events from Woody Hayes punching a player after an INT to Florida State dropping Bobby Bowden as they tried to carry him off the field for his last game. Despite these, I found it interesting that WIKI listed Missouri and Clemson as the saviors for this bowls longevity:
The first two years of the event did not sell out the small capacity stadium, drawing only 7,362 to the 1946 game when the Wake Forest Demon Deacons defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks, 26–14. The stadium was expanded in 1948 and renamed the Gator Bowl Stadium in honor of the event. However, it was not until the 1949 matchup between the Clemson Tigers and the Missouri Tigers that the future of the Gator Bowl was assured: the 1948 attendance of 16,666 for a 20–20 tie between Maryland and Georgia was nearly doubled with 32,939 watching Clemson squeak by Missouri, 24–23, on a late field goal by Jack Miller.
My family will be leaving tonight for the game and hope for some good tailgating weather as the forecast tomorrow is 75F (68F at kickoff). MIZ…

I just bet on Mizzou - this is the kind of game we almost always win ... now if we were playing a good team ...

I think this game matches up well for Mizzou and UVA has not played anyone with a run game like ours. There is a good reason that Mizzou is the favorite despite UVA being ranked #19. My only concern is Mizzou will be without 5 starters including 2 WRs and an all-SEC DL player, and Virginia will have everyone available.

all I know is if this was a 'big game' my $ would be on Virginia

p.s. it'll be 75 here in MO too!

Keep in mind, Virginia was a win away from a likely playoff appearance. I don’t think they’re a top 12 team in the country, but they will be formidable.

C'mon, they couldn't beat Duke.

They also beat Duke 34-17. They’re ranked 19th and are 10-3. They played in the ACC Championship game. They beat Louisville who beat Miami and Kentucky 41-0. They’re not going to be a cakewalk.

While I would love a Mizzou win, my biggest hope is for Zoellers to have a solid game. I would hate for him to have a Jared Goff type game as that will eat into his confidence all off season

Hey didn’t Ohio State teach us a few years ago when we pushed them around that missing a QB and some receivers is an excuse for not doing anything on offense in a bowl game?

My prediction is we don’t have to worry about that. I do think it’ll be a great game though.

Except for 2024, 2023, 2014, 2013, 2010, 2008, 2007, 1969 & 1960.

Have fun at the game and bring home a winner!

I missed a key piece of information. Meant to say first time we finished with 9 wins for three consecutive years, but who cares about a few small details :)

On the plus side, it looks like Mizzou fans traveled well as we seen several groups in the hotel bar tonight.

Looking for a close game myself.

Wondering how notable Lindsey may be with his short tenure.

I figured as much, I’m just having a little fun. I’m just glad Michigan didn’t hire Drinkwitz. I'm geeked to see what Zollers can do with a few weeks of practice as the designated #1 QB.

The Wahoos won AT Duke on November 15.

The never trailed and led 31-3 after three quarters.

Drink says they are going to lean on Hardy and Roberts, that means dump offs and end arounds unless they fall behind and have to open it up.

So I take it if MU wins it will be looked upon as just an exhibition and if they lose than Zollers and Drinkwitz will be hung in effigy.

Frankly given all the turnover the last two weeks Id be surprised if MU wins this game.
