Gates needs to go
Too many threads are beating around the bush. Gates needs to be fired. He is not a competent SEC coach.
Re: Gates needs to go
Maybe Shady, but outside Crowe, who has he recruited that’s been any good?

Re: Gates needs to go
Boateng looks like a football player! He picked the wrong sport.
Why he looks ready to take over at linebacker when Josiah Trotter goes to the NFL.
What was Gates thinking?
Did Gates have enough NIL money to operate and recruit against top programs this season?
Gates, in the off season, said his priority was to use a lot of the NIL money to retain players like Mitchel, Robinson, Pierce, Crews, TO and Boateng.
What he should have done is get some players who can hit threes instead of retaining "slasher" out of control players like TO.
Copy Underwood and at least explore the possibility of recruiting European players.
Todd Golden, Florida coach, is another guy that looks at International players. Gates needs to "Change".

Agree. Add a couple of European players to his slashers and try to follow the Purdue, UConn approach.straight out of st louis robert ave wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 21:06 pmBoateng looks like a football player! He picked the wrong sport.

Re: Gates needs to go
As disappointed I am with Gates’s preparation and in-game coaching, I think Gates needs the same recipe Drink does. Become a CEO. Recruit like crazy. Keep harmony. And hire some high level assistants to run the show on the court. Whatever we do, keep the recruiting class-these guys are going to be special.
Re: Gates needs to go
folks who cover MU sports are starting to post negative things about Gates, even he needs to go. Just not a Power 4 HC. could see him being the top assistant to a Big Brand program or G5 HC but he just can't put together a competitive team consistantly. Have zero confidence that the Great recruiting class will show up or if they do he can put together complimentary players around them and become what we all want. His assistants are all like him G5 types who have zero business being at a SEC or other type conference school. They just don't coach fundamentals and have basically a bunch of guys running around doing their own thing.
Already this team has settled into not even being competitive with any team with a pulse and SEC will destroy them. Not going to bother to dvr them.
Luckily for us we have other teams to root for in Ill and SLU who have good coaching staffs and very competitive teams.

Re: Gates needs to go
It will be a miracle if we get to 15 wins, which means we win 5 SEC games. Remember, only two years ago we were 0-19 against the SEC, last year we won 10. This year, Gates had 5 scholarships to give and the great recruiter brought in four guys who couldn't start for their previous team, and one guy who had a history of injury. True to form the four guys have had no impact on the team and the fifth is injured, five misses. Now add Boateng, who showed little to nothing last year, and Burns who was a huge question mark and hadn't played in a couple years, and you have 7 guys who with huge question marks by their name. Other than Mitchell and an inconsistent Ant and you had no one with any history of success. Before anyone says Crews, I am not convinced this guy is more than an energy guy who can go off occasionally but is just as likely to go 1-9 against good competition and is a defensive liability. Add all this to his lack of actual coaching ability and you have a recipe for disaster.
If Gates gets 5 wins in the SEC he will be back without a question. Less than that it will be up for discussion, but he will return. For me, I've seen enough, he needs to go unless we have a miracle turn around, which won't happen.

Re: Gates needs to go
Gates has had many recruiting successes. Ghoston, Bates, East, Mitchell, Robinson, Hodge, etc. Flops like Mosely and perhaps Amari Davis. Marquis Warrick should have had a lot more playing time - just didn't use him properly, or Diarra or Shaw. Play to the players strengths. Biggest problem I see is we lack x-o type coach. Don't have to repeat the obvious history, but Anderson, Haith, Martin and now Gates show they can't adapt. 1-2 key players are off or injured, the team just grossly underperforms.

The common denominator in those coaches was the teams didn't play any defense to speak of.happynotlucky wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 10:16 am Gates has had many recruiting successes. If they're not shooting lights out or playing a directional school they're in trouble.

Give you Bates and Mitchell…. The others were ok but not premium gets. Look at all the misses we were “in on”, especially impactful big men. He brought in Mack, Randal, Phillips, Norweather, and Porter this year. Who in that group is good enough to impact this team in a positive way? No shooters in that group, no defenders, no ball-handlers. This was a complete zero when he needed to add 2-3 complimentary players to Mitchelland Ant. You can’t build a sustainable roster failing two years in a row recruiting high school players. That’s what Gates has done- next year’s class has promise, but you’re not winning with 2-3 freshmen Inyour starting lineup.

Great post!
He brought in Mack, Randall, Phillips, Norweather and Porter who have produced nothing.
I would also like to add that he retained TO, Boateng and Trent Burns. What have they shown? TO and Boateng are just slashers like Mack and offer nothing to the offense. It is a mess.
Right now, you have a number of players who are poor on defense and just know one thing: Drive to the basket,
We saw what the Illini did to Boateng when he tried to drive to the basket - he gets his shot blocked and the opposing teams are just laughing at Mizzou's expense.
Gates needs a miracle and Jaylen Stone is not God! We can't pin our hopes on one player.
Gates just simply messed up again just like he did in his second year.
Actually, his team in the 2nd year is better than this team.
One thing I would do if I was Gates is to get Trent Burns more playing time.
Burns, with more playing time, might be a useful player next season.
Re: Gates needs to go
Two things I think is hurting Gates this year verse his previous teams.
1) He recruits long and lean athletic players who are more comfortable outside the paint verses inside and tries to put them at the 4 or 5 position. That works in some levels, but in the SEC you need toughness around the rim. Players like Pierce, Crews, Burns, Porter, and Northweather have the length but no inside presence. When they are in the game they are constantly out rebounded and out played in the paint by much smaller guys. Because we have no inside game teams can sell out to stop the dribble and then we have zero offense. Mitchell and Boateng seem to play strong around the rim, but that is it and they are not playing in the low post positions.
2) We play horrible defense in the backcourt. Robinson is solid and can shut down other teams PG, but we are missing Perkins and East badly. Barrett gets beat routinely and cant stay in position to save his life. People point to our poor 3pt defense, but it starts with the guards being able to stop penetration which we lack outside of Robinson.
We need to start recruiting big bodies and guards who play D. Gates will not be fired in the offseason due to the incoming class and the buyout, but for me we need to see improvement and consistency in 2026-2027
