Re: Cardinals and Red Sox still talking
I know I’m going to get blasted for this, but if Boston acquires Donovan, doesn't that block some of their young hitters? Why can’t we acquire one of those? The Cardinals do need hitters too, especially after moving Contreras and Donovan!
Boston’s outfield is already crowded. Abreu, Duran, Anthony, and Rafaela. If they get Donovan, then their infield has Contreras at 1B, and Donovan at 2B, that pushes Campbell, Casas, and Mayer out, I would think. They also are still trying to bring back Bregman for 3B.
Wouldn’t one of those guys be good to get?
Boston, wouldn’t do a one for one I doubt but the Cardinals have other players that could be added. Ok, blast away!

Donovan should be the starting LF for STL next season, but if Bloom does trade him the return should be a starting MLB outfielder.
Duran preferably, if Boston is the trade partner.
Personally, I would go after Pages in LA.

We could do worse than Bello for sure. Nasty sinker. Just don't understand why they would be looking to move him?opti mist wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 07:13 am Brayan Bello's 2025 season with the Boston Red Sox was a solid step forward, as he posted career-best marks in ERA and WHIP while dealing with an early-season shoulder injury that delayed his debut.Key stats (regular season):Record: 11-9
ERA: 3.35
Games/Starts: 29 games, 28 starts
Innings Pitched: 166.2
Strikeouts: 124
Walks: 59
WHIP: 1.24
Home Runs Allowed: 16
WAR: 2.5
He started the year on the injured list due to right shoulder inflammation from spring training and made his debut in late April/early May. Highlights included a complete game (first career 9-inning CG) on July 8 against the Rockies, where he struck out 10 in a 10-2 win. Overall, he showed improved control and consistency, anchoring the rotation despite the slow start.

That the Red Sox and Cardinals both had needs that they matched up on and Bloom thought he could get the best players from the Red Sox. Not that difficult. Especially when, like I said, Bloom’s only connection was to Blaze Jordan (a low level deal last year when he wasn’t GM) and Dobbins (probably the 2nd most important player for the future in that deal).
Really no need to get conspiratorial about it.

It's a conspiracy that he ran Boston until 2023?Ronnie Dobbs wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 18:55 pmThat the Red Sox and Cardinals both had needs that they matched up on and Bloom thought he could get the best players from the Red Sox. Blake Anita - drafted by Boston in 2024.
Yhoiker Fajardo - signed by the White Sox in 2024, traded to Boston in 2025.
Brandon Clarke - drafted by Boston in 2024.
Richard Fitts - Yankees traded him to Boston 3 months after Bloom left in 2023.
Player to be named later - I suppose this could be a prospect left over from the Bloom era.
Hunter Dobbins - drafted by Boston in the 8th round of 2021. I suppose it’s possible that this one guy out of the six players traded for was acquired because Chaim Bloom just couldn’t resist that 8th round pick he made five years ago.

No, you won't - you already haven't.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 15:26 pmI suppose that's not impossible but if it were to happen a more plausible explanation would be he was aloof and not paying close attention to scouting reports and is only familiar with Boston's prospects.Melville wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 13:14 pmAnd what if Boston made the best offer for Grau, and then for Contreras, and does so with Donovan as well?ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 13:10 pm My guess is Boston was interested in Donovan but settled for Contreras.
If Bloom only trades with Boston then we have a major problem.
Would that be a major problem?
We'll see what happens. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt so far.

Did you mean if Boston adds a reliever and throws in another player we should trade Donovan then?Hoosier59 wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 11:03 am If the Bosox trade for Donovan, that could displace Kristian Campbell. I’m aware that a 1 for 1 isn’t likely here, but if the Cardinals add in Romero and a lower level minor leaguer, perhaps a deal could be reached. An infield of Wetherholt, Winn, Campbell, and Burleson would be pretty awesome. Campbell could also play left field, or even centerfield.
Has everyone given up on Gorman? Is our outfield not a shambles?

Did you miss where Campbell can play both left and centerfield? It's right up there in the post you responded to.Cardinals1964 wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 05:04 amDid you mean if Boston adds a reliever and throws in another player we should trade Donovan then?Hoosier59 wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 11:03 am If the Bosox trade for Donovan, that could displace Kristian Campbell. The hundreds of prospects on 28 other teams were not drafted by him either. My question is why only Boston?Ronnie Dobbs wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 19:27 pmBlake Anita - drafted by Boston in 2024.

BECAUSE BOSTON HAD THE BEST OFFER!!! It's not a conspiracy.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 06:31 amThe hundreds of prospects on 28 other teams were not drafted by him either. My question is why only Boston?
It's two whole trades he made with them. Why do you insist on making it some crazy conspiracy??

Re: Cardinals and Red Sox still talking
A Donovan for Kristian Campbell trade would be pretty ballsy.
BTV has Donovan at +32.5 and Campbell at +19.4, so the Cardinals should be able to also get significantly more in the deal, maybe even a Kyson Witherspoon (+17.7) if he can be dealt.
Campbell would move to the OF as a RH bat and is signed through 2032 with team options for 2033 and 2034.

I would assume that he either hired and certainly worked closely with the people under him at Boston. They are a resource for him, I'm guessing. He could probably call a minor league manager and get the scoop on certain prospects. Seems to me to be a good thing. For instance, with Seatte, Bloom probably has to rely on scouting reports instead of first-hand information.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 06:31 amThe hundreds of prospects on 28 other teams were not drafted by him either.
