Dobbins is on track to be ready for spring trainingHoosier59 wrote: ↑21 Dec 2025 22:57 pm I just read where Dobbins won’t be ready by Spring. He will still be rehabilitating his 2nd torn ACL. Re: Contreras to Red Sox
So Contreras, who for long stretches was bad enough to earn the moniker "Willy LongCon," a soon-to-be 34-year-old with $40 mil remaining on his contract, who, admittedly, hit a few timely dingers and doubles every now and then, played really good 1B, but had absolutely 0 future on this rebuilding club for:
-a rookie/sophmore MLB-ready pitcher with a 4.10 ERA in his rookie campaign at 26 years old, who also had a 3.08 ERA has last full year in the minors
-recent grad college pitcher with a 3's ERA his last year in NCAA
-a 19-year old Venezuelan with a supposedly electric arm
It's not overwhelming but when I first saw someone say "salary dump" move, I wouldn't have been surprised one bit if that ended up being the case.
I give it a B-
Can't complain.
Of course, a lot of that depends on whether or not Dobbs will be ready to pitch next season and whether or not he's an injury lemon.

Yes it’s been reported that bloom will add another veteran starterHoosier59 wrote: ↑21 Dec 2025 22:57 pm I just read where Dobbins won’t be ready by Spring. That’s not what I read, hope you are correct. Did you read that somewhere else, that he would be ready?ecleme22 wrote: ↑21 Dec 2025 23:00 pmDobbins is on track to be ready for spring trainingHoosier59 wrote: ↑21 Dec 2025 22:57 pm I just read where Dobbins won’t be ready by Spring. Re: Contreras to Red Sox
The former regime kept trying to "compete" with an inadequate base rather than clearing house so, yes, it should have been initiated last year or even before that. But it wasn't then so the time is now.
They had to ask if they wanted to stay. They had no trade clauses, the team couldn't just move them without their say so. Arenado said no last year. End of story. Gray and Contreras said they wanted to stay. End of story. Blame the previous guy for getting them into this mess, not the current guy for doing what he can to start getting them out of it.
If you don't have the stomach for a re-build go away and come back when the weather is more fair.

I read the article again, and what it actually says is that he won’t be available for the opening day roster.Hoosier59 wrote: ↑21 Dec 2025 23:06 pmThat’s not what I read, hope you are correct. Re: Contreras to Red Sox
I'm not excited about tanking 2026 and 2027 but this Contreras trade appears to be a good move in the strategy they have chosen. The just saved another $10M in 2026 and $23M in 2027 and as the payroll continues to go down, it is possible they will add to the 2026 and 2027 rosters. Presently, this seems like a 70 win team. Lots of offseason to go...
I am excited that the Cards seem to be making better long term decisions. They have a pretty good farm system now so there's hope for the future. It may be a bit rough waiting though. If they win most trades, develop well, and make smarter FA signings, they will turn this ship around eventually.

omg Web7 thought LongCon was our best RH bat? That guy is still batship cray-cray.
Herrera looked fine in LF to me. Would much rather see him there than catching. He's far too injury-prone to be behind the plate.

Rotowire: Dobbins (knee) has been cleared to start a full throwing program, the pitcher revealed on his X account Monday. With Boston in the hunt for a $30M+ player it helps them more than the face value of $24M being sent for SG and WC
in CBT. It was a part of being able to move these players.
Does NA have the stomach for this after what happened last off season or is
he going to say yes to a lesser deal sooner?
I'd have zero surprise of a pitcher being added in a Donovan deal and it not
just the past JoJo suggestions.
Go get Eldridge.

Re: Contreras to Red Sox
BTV has this scored Cardinals +9.3, Boston -6.1, and that's without even including Aita.
Farjardo and Aita are the kind of prospects where we have to expect the new Cardinals FO to do a better than average job of identifying prospects in other teams' minor league systems to acquire and develop. Time will tell.

Bernie was right about what blooms strategy would be stockpile pitching because the more you have the more chances you have of developing a good starting five and having depth in case of
