MLB.com Cardinals updated top prospects

Post by Ace »

Updated with recent trade. Yhoiker Fajardo comes in at #9. Good season last year despite missing bats with his fastball.

Top 10:

1) Wetherholt
2) Doyle
3) Rodriguez
4) Bernal
5) Mathews
6) Crooks
7) Clarke
8.) Roby
9) Fajardo
10) Jesus Baez

Top 6 we drafted ourselves IIRC. Drafting and signing will continue to be the most effective means of building the future.

Also I don’t understand why Roby is still in the top 10

It's not a great list IMO. My top 20 probably looking something like this currently:

1-10)

Wetherholt
Doyle
Rodriguez
Josh Baez
Mathews
Bernal
Clarke
Hence
Franklin
Crooks

11-20)

Henderson
Padilla
Fajardo
Roby
Jesus Baez
Hjerpe
Mitchell
Mautz
Deniel Ortiz
Wei Lin

One of the better top 11-20 lists I've seen from the Cardinals, system is starting to get some depth to it.

Plus wait til after the Donovan trade AND the 2026 draft where the Cardinals select 3 players in the first two rounds. By next Augusts there will be another 4 or 5 guys possibly in the Top 20

it's not a real "updated" board...their offseason updates will come after the new year. This is just a "Slot trade piece into current proper position". I expect Roby, Hence, and Hjerpe to drop a bit, but not as much as we think come Februrary....Hence may drop quite a bit, actually.

Mathews likely won't be 5th. Jesus Baez won't be 10th. And Padilla, Franklin, Mautz and Josh Baez will be much higher.

Interesting, thanks! What's your preferred resource for staying up on minor league content?

Baseball America and MLBpipeline...despite their slowness in a true update (BA updates monthly), MLBpipeline has 3 really good prospect writers....Callis and Mayo in particular. BA is the best by a mile...Cooper is one my favorite pundits of all time.

Fangraphs has gotten exponentially better with Prospects and College coverage, too.

not a bad list at all, Ace. Well done.

Imo...and I'm just an earlier believer, but Padilla is smidge low

As of today, I would drop Hence out of the top 10 and put Padilla between Bernal and Clarke. Padilla will rise quickly when he can get a full season in.

I wonder where Luna will fall on the Top 20/30 lists? If reports are accurate that we will sign a Top 10 IFA. I hope it's true. Nothing 100% confirmed.

BA is much more accurate when it comes to assessing Latin Players than anyone else.

At age 16, it would be hard to imagine him in a top 20 until he has played somewhere.

What I like about our top 30 prospect list right now is that there is a good representation throughout the system. It's not all concentrated at the bottom, or the top.

I love it to there is also not a situation where it’s like oh we have Reyes if he doesn’t make it as front of the rotation starter we are screwed or hey we have Carlson if he doesn’t develop we are screwed they have a lot of talent coming not all of the eggs in one basket
