A Weird Trade Proposal

Post by Talkin' Baseball »

The Rays have had a hole at catcher for quite some time. Here’s a weird proposal. The Rays get their choice of Pages or Crooks, the Cardinals get Brandon Lowe, #19 prospect Ty Johnson, and #29 prospect OF James Quinn-Irons.

Lowe is the weird part. We are listening to offers on Brendan Donovan, why would we want Lowe? In the immediate sense, it stifles an option that teams interested in Donovan can pivot to. He can be traded later, much like when the Marlins had Ozuna and Yelich to trade, but would only listen to offers on Ozuna first. It might help you get more for Donovan now and you might get more for Lowe when you trade him than you could get for our catcher (the market is broader).

Johnson is ready for AAA. He struck out 12.2/9 this season in AA. Quinn-Irons is the definition of a flier. He just played his first year of pro ball. He is 6’5” and 230lbs. He is described as a 4-tool player, with the deficiency being they don’t know if he will make enough contact to advance. A flier for sure.
