The Oscars will leave ABC and begin streaming on YouTube starting in 2029, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday, signaling that Hollywood’s most prestigious award ceremony’s seven-decade history on broadcast TV may be coming to an end.
ABC, which has broadcast the Academy Awards since 1976, will continue to do so through 2028. YouTube — one of the largest and oldest social media companies, which hosts billions of user-made videos and already partners on marquee events such as the Olympics — obtained the global rights to stream the Oscars through 2033. The streamer has not announced a broadcast partner or if it will have one.
