Florida quarterback DJ Lagway intends to enter the portal, he announced, ending his two-year run with the Gators. He figures to be among the most prized targets of the offseason and could be the top-ranked transfer quarterback on the market.
Slightly off topic but my interest in college football has decreased since NIL was enacted (2021) and really after NIL was tweaked so that the funds could cone straight from the schools.
Now the portal came much before NIL and I viewed it as fair. Why should they give Lane Kiffins, Brian Kellys and Nick Sabans of the sport a chance to pack their bags for greener pastures but the players could not? Say you’re a kid mired in the bench but could be the starter at many other schools, no problem letting them transfer.
I didn’t have a problem with paying student athletes either. Give them a stipend, something like $10/hr for time on organized practice, workouts and games - including travel. All sports, all athletes the same.
Now players are transferring like crazy (sometimes simply for more money) and the cost for students and fans to attend games have skyrocketed.
Something will need to change or the golden goose will die from these changes.
