I Love The Blues

Post by Tabasco Flowers »

From the late 60's, to the present. I used to go to games a lot. Now since I'm older, I just want to watch on the tube. Now, it seems you have to subscribe to several channels to watch.

This life long fan will be listening to radio broadcasts from here on out, and watching the highlights on the Blues page.

Money is too tight.

Hopefully they tell you who is skating left to right, right to left on your radio dial or you might be a tad confused.

Barn burners with Dan Kelly on KMOX and KPLR. Those were the days, my friend.

And now John Kelly isn't even valued here. Staying competitive trumps staying accessible and exciting for every kid.

I only have ESPN+ because DirecTV gave me some kind of bonus. I can afford it but I don't like ESPN and don't want to give them any money- at least directly.

It's a shame they don't make some of the games available for cheap or free like when they were on Channel 11. Based on the ads last night- which seemed to be the same drug company over and over- I would not think they are making anything off the broadcasts. But sports leagues are as greedy as they come and even the promise of another dime shapes their policies.

Maybe there is a bar/restaurant around you that shows the games and has reasonably priced meals.

I've always thought after being a fan since game one you either have to have a screw loose or be a manic depressive to be a diehard Blues fan.

I fell in love with the sport the first time I saw it on those old Sunday afternoon TV broadcast I belive Dan Kelly did although I could be wrong.

Maybe its the Midwest working man's thing that it's just in the blood.

I love baseball and football just as much but hockey is just different.

I didn't become a hockey fan until the early 70's when we got cable. We got the old msg network with the NY Rangers. My mom liked Ron Duguay with his long flowing hair (of course this was before mandatory helmets). I became a Blues fan later on. I think hockey is a sport that you really need to watch in person, it's very hard to follow on TV sometimes. I have seen the Cardinals win multiple ws titles and I have been a baseball fan since early childhood but for me the Blues winning the Cup after so many disappointments was the best feeling. We drove 2 hours just to see the parade and it was fantastic!

I too became a fan in the 1960's. I had several large families of boys in my neighborhood. When we played street hockey, it was common to have twenty players. We actually rolled lines. :) We'd had KSHE radio blaring while we played. I played for the old St. Louis Bruins at Steinberg Rink. Freezing cold mini squirt and squirt practices at 530AM. Taking off the skates after practice as the foot warmed up would make a grown man cry. But I digress. We had one color TV in the house growing up and the rest of the family didn't love hockey the way I did. I spent most of my time listening to Dan Kelly, Gus Kyle and Noel Picard call the game while I did my homework in my room. Radio is real life theater. I miss those days. Since the Blues don't have a unified TV broadcast, I listed to the game while I work on the computer. It's a very peaceful experience.

Also, not sure if any of you can relate, but the only games you could watch on TV in the 60's, 70's and early part of the 80's were road games. The blues wore the dark uniform kits on the road then. I remember Game 7 against Minnesota. I think the date was April 21'st, 1972. My baby brother was baptized that day. Seeing the Blues on TV in their white uniform kits and the big Blues logo at center ice was comparable to watching the moon landing for me. Pretty cool

Dan Kelly on the radio WAS theater! He painted pictures, masterpieces, in our minds.

As a kid I watched many games on an old 11-inch screen portable b&w, channel 11. Now, I have a 65" OLED smart TV. Life is good. To think, that old portable weighed a heck of a lot more than my new 65"!

Those broadcasts with Kelly and Gus Kyle.

Remember those 10:05 west coast starts against the Kings and the California Golden Seals with the transistor under the pillow on school nights.

It always seemed like everytime the opposition would score a goal Kyle would say "they got the Blues running around in their own zone".

Thinking about it now it just cracks me up.

Same here Dawg. Hard to say never, but I don't believe ther could ever be another Dan Kelly. At the same time, hockey was new for me in 1967 when the Blues were created. Now, Blues hockey is the only sport I'm interested in. Too hard to remember stuff about all the other sports, although I'll watch another Missouri team if the game is important "sometimes."

By the way, does anyone else remember watching hockey games out of New York once in a while? I believe the station was WOR, or something like that.

Dan Kelly's voice was a tenor with such perfect pitch and expressiveness that Pavarotti could have taken notes.

A magnificent Irish Tenor, to be sure.
