STL has NEVER had a #1 overall pick

Post by Carp4Cy »

And I wouldn't bet on it in 2027 either. The odds are just not good for us.

The highest we've ever picked was 3 - Braden Looper who we later flipped for the superior Edgar Renteria - then got Looper back as a SP a few years later.

Our only First Rounder to become a HOFer was Ted Simmons, taken 10th overall.

The only first round picks to win a WS with the Cards were Looper (in his 2nd stint), the late great Chris Duncan, and Lance Lynn.

Several other first round picks were traded for WS winning players however, including JD Drew, Colby Rasmus, and Brett Wallace.

If Bloom fails to commit to a full rebuild many in here will die before the Cards win another pennant.

what's Bloom got to do with commit? He's already initiated the full teardown as well as player development. Gray is gone. Donny is on the clock. Nado is ultimately a non-factor long term as he will either be gone or his contract will expire on its own as a sunk cost.

Whether the BUILD part of rebuild happens will depend on what BDW will commit to spending in the near future.

I said that In response to your comment about the Cards not getting the #1 over all pick in 2027.

While you didn’t go into the “why” I gathered from other recent threads and podcasts that Bloom is refusing to properly tear the roster down (likely resulting in poor W/L record) but instead will field a somewhat competitive team just like his predecessor, Mo.

There’s a lot of hot stove talk but trade talk is cheap. If Bloom actually trades BD, WC, and eventually Noot for futures then A) I will be pleased but B) why wouldn’t the Cards have a solid chance at a top pick in 2027?

Did I misunderstand the OP?

A "solid chance" is still going to be less than 1 in 5 of the #1 overall. And there will still be even worse teams than us just because we actually have some talented 22 year olds who need to develop a competitive drive and can't just be told to intentionally lose 125 games.

The OP is - draft what you can but we aren't going to get the next franchise Bobby Witt or Mike Trout from losing at some historical rate. Its just not going to work out in reality like it does in some people's minds. Plenty of HOFers come from outside the top 5 picks, and plenty in our history come from trades as well. Our future is a lot more dependent on good trades and good signings and good scouting and good investing and developing (including at the MLB level with the most motivating Tony/Dave like leaders we can find) than it is on trying to tank to manipulate the system.
