Revisiting my too many misfits thread

Post by Bluesfan1988 »

By misfits, I didn't mean players that can't play, I meant players that don't play the same style of hockey.

We have too many differing styles of players on this roster and they are not coming together.

It would seem the Blues want a grinding, dump in type of play but not all of our players are built to grind in the corners. Some are finesse, some are.grinders, some are front of netters.

I like the physical type of play, it's what won us the cup. But we lack the hunger to score and I attribute that to line chemistry at this point in the season..

Age.is a factor for some, experience for others. Too many passes looking for the highlight goal instead of getting it done.

Again, I’ve been saying this for years about roster construction. They don’t play a dissimilar game and they won’t draft the appropriate players necessary for today’s game. They’re stuck constructing early 2000’s rosters, with modern day players and it worked almost a decade ago when we lucked into a Cup, and they never evolved with the times.

They refused to cough up enough for Matthew Tkachuk and infuse some identity into this franchise. He would’ve changed the entire trajectory of this franchise.

They didn’t luck into a cup they had to earn it. Legit the stupidest thing I’ve read today.

100%. Big time whiff. That was a pivotal moment for both the Blues and Panthers

JR reported it was Tarasenko, Scandella and “picks”. Not sure what the picks were

I disagree...we don't need Tkachuk we need more talent spread throughout the lineup...and there is no evidence that Tkachuk wanted to play here as opposed to Florida where they have better weather and no income tax.

First off Tkachuk excels at dump/chase, battle on the boards and in front of the net type of hockey. I would have loved to have landed him for that reason. Skill, toughness, tenacity, willingness to go to the dirty areas and dominate. We need all of that embodied in individuals players and not spread across the roster. The teams skill players are too soft with little will to battle and the grinder types lack skill/speed. It's a mishmash that doesn't play any style well. We've gotten small and soft on defense as well. I can live with CP being more of a use his length type but we still need some bangers back there to. Hoping Mailloux develops into at least a middle pair guy who can bring that mindset. And overall I'd say the Hockey IQ on the team is pretty low.

That’s not true. Tkachuk himself said that his three team list to the Flames was Florida, Blues and Carolina.

Tkachuk has skill in spades and he also drags guys into the fight. He provides a physical presence that this organization sorely lacks and needs terribly.

You make and summarize very good points.
I also believe the other comments in general about "identity" are very important. The Coaches talk about the value and importance of our "Identity LINE." We need to expand that to a Team Identity. Maybe not everybody can deliver on that style, whatever it may be, but they all have to have the mindset. Everyone in Hockey knew about the Big Bad Bruins, or the Broad Street Bullies, or the Flying Frenchman of those great Stanley Cup Winning teams in the 1970s. Oilers identity was obviously shaped by the Great One with their run & gun style, and an unbelievably acrobatic goalie whom could allow them to do it.
It's difficult to comment on the specific potential trade for either Tkachuk without knowing the facts. It's almost pointless to look back on it and try to reconstruct it. But use it as a lesson-learned that is the type of thing that we need. And then figure out how to seriously get it done real soon. Right now, every team is looking forward to playing the Blues. That needs to stop.

I see most are seeing what I'm seeing.

Good guys, with their individual skill sets, but not fitting together..

We have good skaters, good shooters, good grinders, but too many differences between them to give this team an identity one way or the other. The shooters, don't want to grind, the grinders are too slow to keep up with the skaters, the skaters have no place to fit in.

It's a mess and it shows. Players are not buying into the system, not willing/able to fit into the system, or have given up on the system because there's not enough players of one mindset, or skill set to bring it together.
