Unless I’m missing something he hasn’t had an at-bat since 2017.

I just saw “Pitcher/Outfielder” and was hoping we’d get a power hitter in the outfield. My bad.

Here is what I found on him: The St. Louis Cardinals select Matthew Pushard (from MIA) with the 7th pick in the Rule 5 Draft

Matt Pushard spent 2025 in AAA and posted an solid 3.61 ERA and 2.98 FIP across 62.1 innings with Jacksonville. His fastball was dominant in AAA with a 35.2 Whiff% and 39.5 Chase%

Sounds like a low risk BP move?

Also sounds like instructions were Miss Understood. "Push hard on the choice. Make it a good one."

Exactly.
With Romero on the move and LH BP options already depleted, this pick is simply part of the scrum options who will sort themselves out in ST.

"The Ohtani/Pushard Rule".
Not quite catchy.

The Cards have actually had some decent success recently
picking up low cost relievers.

With the elimination of the LOOGY, teams can focus more specifically on investing in an 8th inning shut down arm and a 9th inning closer.
The rest are now simply mix-n-match relievers from day to day, which makes this type of acquisition entirely reasonable.

My question about Pushard is why was he in the minors instead of playing in Miami at age 27?

For a Rule 5 pick, older, RH RP is probably the profile most likely to be able to stick in the majors next year.

his ascent and numbers going up thw minors seem fine. the age thing seems to just mostly be because he went to college til age 24

Okay, but Miami isn't good and he was in their milb at 27. He has to be on the 26 man roster.
