Re: Schwarber returns to Philly
Schwarber appears to be on the Darrell Evans career track, except that Evans didn't strike out nearly as much. But they both have the ability to walk and hit homers. Had Evans played today, I wonder if they'd lead him off. Adam Dunn is another. He might lead off today.
Re: Schwarber returns to Philly
He is just a DH. that's all he does. Philly doesn't care about his relationship with Harper. their GM just said this offseason that Harper wasn't elite any longer. It was an entire ESPN article
Re: Schwarber returns to Philly
I agreed he is a DH. Which DH is better was my point.
Philly proved wanted KS. That is one half of the equation. The other half might, maybe,
perhaps was influenced by what dugout Mr Schwarber wanted to be in.
There is a difference between a boss questioning the performance and production
and a boss questioning the player. He called Harper a very good player. He questioned if he
was still providing elite. He should have done that privately period. That's fine to miss as Harper himself missed that
subtle difference with the whole "I bust my but, no one gives more" response. His effort wasn't brought up.
In simple terms like WAR is 2.5-3.5 elite? That's 3 of his last 4 seasons.
We get sensitive with criticism, IMO. We need to understand and practice being
critical of production and performance, and not be personal.
Gormans production sucks vs Gorman sucks.

He would have been a burden in a couple years on the Pirates. Better that they didn't sign him.greyhawk wrote: ↑09 Dec 2025 14:00 pm33 yr old dh's who sign for big $$ on a perennial losing team are like guys that count their poker chips at the table... he still wants to win.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑09 Dec 2025 12:16 pm Pirates "made an offer". Yeah I think Dunn and Evans could've definitely lead off.nighthawk wrote: ↑09 Dec 2025 15:03 pm Schwarber appears to be on the Darrell Evans career track, except that Evans didn't strike out nearly as much. You think he has 2026 and 2027, but will fall off a table in 2028 and 2029?

Maybe two more years of what Schwarber has averaged over the last five (2021-2025):ecleme22 wrote: ↑09 Dec 2025 21:13 pmJust asking: You think Schwarber is done at 35?ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑09 Dec 2025 21:06 pmHe would have been a burden in a couple years on the Pirates. .232/.353/.514, 1 HR every 15 PA or so, 2.75 fWAR per 600 PA as a DH
Then a year or two of a bit less than that:
.220/.335/.475, maybe 2.0 fWAR per 600 PA as a DH
Then down.
The Phillies would probably be doing pretty well to get that. I don't expect him to be worth $150 million over the life of the deal based on his total production, but if the Phillies can win a WS with him, it will have been worth it to them.

Re: Schwarber returns to Philly
I don't know. He just had his best season but it was his walk year and it is not uncommon for players to have a big year in their walk year. He could be an example of a guy who can't play baseball but can sit on the bench and swing a bat a few times a game. When he does taper off he will be a guy striking out 200 times a year and not hitting enough home runs to compensate for the strikeouts. When that happens the Phillies might be able to absorb his contract but a team like the Pirates wouldn't.ecleme22 wrote: ↑09 Dec 2025 21:13 pmJust asking: You think Schwarber is done at 35?ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑09 Dec 2025 21:06 pmHe would have been a burden in a couple years on the Pirates. Removing the COVID season, KS has been pretty consistent, with a range of OPS from .817 to .928.mattmitchl44 wrote: ↑10 Dec 2025 04:19 amMaybe two more years of what Schwarber has averaged over the last five (2021-2025):ecleme22 wrote: ↑09 Dec 2025 21:13 pmJust asking: You think Schwarber is done at 35?ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑09 Dec 2025 21:06 pmHe would have been a burden in a couple years on the Pirates. Unless he totally pulls a Matt Carpenter, I think he's BB rate and power will keep him productive for a while.
Remaining in Philly helps because there is already that comfort level.

If you take his last five years, it wouldn't be at all surprising if he, for example, had:ecleme22 wrote: ↑10 Dec 2025 08:07 amRemoving the COVID season, KS has been pretty consistent, with a range of OPS from .817 to .928.mattmitchl44 wrote: ↑10 Dec 2025 04:19 amMaybe two more years of what Schwarber has averaged over the last five (2021-2025):ecleme22 wrote: ↑09 Dec 2025 21:13 pmJust asking: You think Schwarber is done at 35?ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑09 Dec 2025 21:06 pmHe would have been a burden in a couple years on the Pirates. 2026 = 2025 (4.9 fWAR over 724 PA)
2027 = 2024 (3.3 fWAR over 692 PA)
2028 = 2021 (2.7 fWAR over 471 PA, injury)
2029 = 2022 (2.2 fWAR over 669 PA)
2030 = 2023 (0.9 fWAR over 720 PA)
That would, IMO, be a really good outcome for Philadelphia.

Stupid baseball. You have a guy who hits over 50HR but waste at least one PA with no one on and all the other PA hitting behind the low OBP of the lineup.nighthawk wrote: ↑09 Dec 2025 15:03 pm Schwarber appears to be on the Darrell Evans career track, except that Evans didn't strike out nearly as much. The first at bat of the five, the lead off spot, could also be accomplished after hitters one or two. They also would be on base more than a pure lead off.moose-and-squirrel wrote: ↑10 Dec 2025 08:56 amgets him more AB's.. not saying I agree with it, but..sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑10 Dec 2025 08:55 amThat is a valid point reference rbis. I agree on maximizing at bats.
Re: Schwarber returns to Philly
with the 1-hitter averaging around 750 PAs vs. the 3-hitter's ~714 PAs per 162 gamesmoose-and-squirrel wrote: ↑10 Dec 2025 08:56 amgets him more AB's.. not saying I agree with it, but..sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑10 Dec 2025 08:55 amThat is a valid point reference rbis. So 35 more PA over the season. How many RBI ops missed?? I guarantee it’s much more impactful than 35 more PA
Jeff Kent was just elected to the HOF because he bat behind Bonds in the middle of SF order, do we think he would’ve put up that production Hitting leadoff?
